bias tape binding tool
I love making quilted potholders but have never been able to get the binding right. They never meet so I am sewing on the potholder not the binding. Is there a secret or a tool that will let me make it professional looking. I have 2 presser feet for binding but not for the thickness of a potholder or quilt.
Any help would be appreciated. |
Go slow and you may want to use a stiletto to hold the binding down.
Here is a link to tutorials that may help you with the issue. https://www.byannie.com/beautiful_bindings |
Years ago I purchased a set of bias tape makers. I find them to be most helpful. It takes a bit of time to master the bias tape makers but now I don't think I could do without them to make the right size bindings for various projects. You may want to check the bias tape makers out. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=bias+tape...s_ts-doa-p_4_7 .

I just make my own using 2-1/2 " W.O.F. Strips. Works wonderfully for me.

if you are having trouble with the binding shifting while sewing and therefore sewing off of it and onto the potholder only, try using elmers washable glue with a dry iron and keep it in place. then just wash it out. takes a bit more time, but may save you in the long run.

I turn the pot holder and then top stitch around it 1/4 inch from the edge. I have never seen the point of a separate binding for a potholder unless it's very fancy.

If you put a small border around your potholder front the same as the backing, you could use the method of putting the right sides together and turning the potholder right side out and then doing stitch in the ditch around the front border of the hot pad. Ummm...I going to try the method myself!

To help reduce bulk at the edges before applying the binding, it may help to use a walking foot and zigzag over the edge. That compresses the bulk around the edges, making the binding part a little easier.
