Big Stitch Quilting

This is my first real big stitch project. I hope to continue to learn. I need suggestions as to whether the center of this quilting is OK, when stitching in this manner. I'm quite open to suggestions, as well.

Thank you

Will try picture again to see about center stitching, please

I haven't tried big stitch quilting (I would love to on a project soon--I think it looks so pretty), so I can't help by answering your question. I just wanted to comment to tell you that your quilt is really beautiful!

grandma7 06-05-2018 10:15 AM

Thank you! I will probably not worry, as it's my quilt, right?

If you continue the big stitch through every patch in the pinwheel, the center section should result in forming an 8 pointed star and will be a delightful added element of interest.

WANNABEE 06-05-2018 11:06 AM

It looks lovely, and the big stitches suit the quilt perfectly.

nativetexan 06-05-2018 11:12 AM

yes, as you finish it will all come together. lovely so far!!

Jingle 06-05-2018 01:37 PM

I think it looks beautiful. Your quilt, your way.

grandma7 06-05-2018 01:39 PM

Oh, thanks to all of you. I'll post a pic when I have completed it.

SusieQOH 06-05-2018 01:49 PM

That looks terrific!
Can you tell me what needles you're using? I started mine but the needles are totally wrong- tapestry. The only ones that would work with perle cotton. I ordered some and am waiting for the right ones.
I also love the first pic! Gorgeous fabrics and stitches.

magicmoonmusings 06-05-2018 05:34 PM

Beautiful! My goodness, your stitches are so even! I love this.

looks great

annievee 06-05-2018 07:14 PM

Your quilting is so wonderful--reminds me of our quilts we had growing up--just great !

JanieH 06-07-2018 11:40 AM

your quilting is awesome.

I admire all those that hand quilt. Lovely even stitches. Well done.

grandma7 06-07-2018 01:48 PM

I appreciate all of your comments. I'm using a needle from my pincushion that has a big enough needle eye for the embroidery floss. I can't seem to get the needle right, either.

SusieQOH 06-07-2018 01:57 PM

grandma7- I just got some embroidery needles and they are wonderful!!!! I bought Sashiko needles but they were on the thick side. The embroidery needles have a big eye and are nice and sharp. The brand is Piecemakers.

Really like how you are doing your big stitch quilting. It is going to make for a beautiful quilt.

barny 06-07-2018 04:49 PM

It looks like it is going to be perfect.

I really like your big stitches. I have a question. Are you going to stitch on both sides of the seam like the top picture shows?

If you do you will get the effect of a small star in the center of the pinwheel which would be cool. A lot of work but worth it.

peace

Edit: I thought this picture would show another option.

oh no, the tapestry needle has a round point to slip thru cross stitch holes in fabric. A chenille needle has the same big eye as a tapestry needle but a sharp point like a sharp or a quilting needle. Use that instead. Good Luck.

I really like the hand quilting you have started on the “correct” quilt. :-) I hope I don’t miss it when you post the finished quilt. Just a comment about the first quilt.....I love-love-love the amount of quilting that has been done on this quilt. Not only will the amount of quilting stabilize the quilt for the next 100+ years, but it is beautiful. Remember, “the quilting is what makes the quilt”!

I like big stitch too, and didn't know what needle to use, thanks Jane.

To the original question. I personally would have not went straight thru to the next block, but just went around the triangles, like the pic ube quilting showed. There is no true way to quilt anything, it's yours, and I think it will look great. Can't wait to see the pic when finished.

I use Thimblelady XL needles or chenille needles. You want something sharp with a large enough eye to accommodate your bigger thread.

So pretty! Love your colors, your stitching! All of it and both of them. Thanks for posting those photos!!

grandma7 06-08-2018 02:00 PM

Faintly Artistic, thank you for the needle suggestion. I appreciate everyone's encouragement!
