Biggest Applique?
 

Curious as to what is the biggest applique anyone has ever put onto a quilt? What is the biggest you would recommend? any photos?

I am doing a Calendar wall hanging. It has 12 wall hangings. For May it is flowers with bumble bees. It doen't have a calendar. It just has cute appliques. They are quite large.

I did an almost life size woman ... about 5' tall.

I used steam-a-seam lite and I had to use multiple pieces for the width in some places, but the length was a single roll.

I had a few problems where the adhesive on the fusible didn't stick to the fabric but that could have been because I had heavily starched the fabric. They were small area's, along edges, and I was able to work around it by using my glue stick to tack it down - then I stitched it down (using clear poly thread with a darning foot).

I also appliqued the letters in the same way.

I've done several more that 45" or more. This one in the photo with the inspectors is queen-king size. I enlarged it from a lap quilt pattern. Another one I made was a large GFG with just one large flower. That one is double size. The hexagons are 6" across.

I haven't made a huge motif, but I toyed with the idea of a traditional Hawaiian quilt. The motif is the same size as the ground cloth and are often king size or larger.

The key to largeish applique longivity is it still needs to be stitched down to the background, even if fused. Just a few washes and you would see why, the batting and backing will shift under the motif.

I'm quilting a king- size hand-appliqued Hawaian bedspread. It's red batik on white. It's on my bucket list.

Thanks for the info. I am considering doing a big(4 foot) snowman onto a lap sized quilt that is snowflake fabrics. I do know I will have to do some serious sewing on the snowman. But I think it will be so cute! Too bad I can't start it right now. I have my swap runner to get finished and a couple of other quilts that I want done! And the time marches on!!!

I am working on a queen sized quilt that has appliqued vines all the way around the outer edge- does that count? I've done some pretty large appliques. as for size to recommend???? any size you want to do- guess i'm really not understanding the question. I've never really thought about any restrictions concerning sizes- to me with applique- the sky is the limit- doing applique makes it possible to create anything you want- in what ever size you want it- there are no restrictions.

I have only done a few appliqués so I wasn't sure if there is such a thing as too big in an appliqué. I am thinking of either using some echoing in the snowman or adding some embroidered snowflakes on top of the appliqué and throughout the quilt.
