Machine sew front, hand sew back. I think it looks so much better than machine stitching the back. Just my opinion.

Never unless like for quilts for kids you have to machine sew the bindingwhich I hate to do.
All mine or all the other quilts / wall hangings and runners are allhand sewn |
Same for me - machine it to the front and hand stitch to the back. Just looks better.

Yes, Hopetoquilt- I make my quilts the same way. Stitch the back, then bring it around to the front and hand stitch the front. I think it gives the quilt the professionalism your looking for, and besides that- it just lays down so much better.
I like to watch tv while Im putting on the finishing touches to any quilt. |
I do the same thing other than after sewing to the back I press the binding forward all around and then bring it to the front. It seems to stay in place better. I love the way it looks and feel like it will take any washing, drying, handling forever! I was afraid to tell my sewing club that I did this but was surprised several do the same thing.

I prefer to machine sew the top and the back it is a lot faster for me. We do mostly charity quilts and do some for benefits.

I sew bindings all by machine. I sew it to the back first and then turn it over to the front and top stitch it down; using either a straight stitch or a fancy stitch.
Most of the quilts I make are for a children's charity and they need to be sturdy. Hand stitching is painful after about 15 minutes, so I do as little as possible. |

I use both methods. If I'm in a hurry I make a piping and sew the binding by machine and when I have plenty of time I hand sew to the back of the quilt.

I prefer hand sewing on the back, but understand why some prefer machine. John |
