Sometimes when I'm viewing completed quilts the binding looks alot larger than the usual which is 2 1/2 in folded and sewn at 1/4 inch then wrapped around back and hand sewn. So with that what do you think these quilts that look like they have larger binding are being sewn at? I like the way it looks but not sure at what to cut or sew at. Thanks

I cut a 2.5 strip, fold in half and sew it on with a 3/8" seam. It gives a nice full binding. I also press it before I hand stitch.

Usually I do 2 1/4", folded with 1/4" seam unless it's for Linus and I make the binding wider and usually fold onto front and sew by machine. It's quilting - you may do it however you like! I've even gotten really anal sometimes and did the binding half and half (1 1/2" of 2 different fabrics sewn together then pressed at the seam) so the binding matches front and back. It's cute to do on something small, like a wall hanging or place mats that you want to be reversible.
