Binding on Bias

Do any of you have problems when you hand sew the binding on the back when it is on the bias and it rolls some? Any suggestions? Thanks.

If it's rolling, I am thinking that you may have stretched it away from the true bias as you stitched it in place.

Perhaps before you cut the bias strips, starch the fabric with best press.

If your quilt doesn't have curved edges, such as a scalloped border, is there a particular reason you are using bias binding?

A lot of people feel the binding wears better if it is cut on the bias - most of my quilts are cut straight of grain and I haven't had an issue with the binding wearing out.

I love to bind with bias. it seems a bit harder to machine stitch the bias strip to the top side but easier to hand stitch the back and when finished I think it lies prettier.

Jan, I did it for the reason Nammie said---I have heard the binding will hold up better. QuiltE, good idea about the starching. Adamae, do you also have any suggestions, since your bias binding lie prettier for you? My binding on straight lie prettier than on the bias, but I haven't done many on the bias.

I have heard that the bias binding is better as far as wear, my thoughts the regular binding wears good as well with the two layers. I might have to try this sometime. I say so much, but when I bind the quilt I am working on, I will go to my normal way that works.

Lots of pins! I find that I have to turn the binding to the back and pin a distance before trying to stitch it down. It seems to help with easing in the bias and you don't end up with a ripple advancing down the binding in front of your stitching. If you have binding clips, they would work instead of the pins which can be painful while stitching the binding.

My last two quilts I used continuous bias binding. I like that once it's cut it's all already put together. I haven't has any problem with hand sewing to the back, but then I do use Best Press before sewing it to the quilt.

I cut on straight grain unless I have curves.
