Binding clips vs. hair clips

Has anyone used the Dritz binding clips? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER Are they stouter than regular hair clips that are about the same size and cheaper?

quiltingcandy 03-03-2013 01:43 PM

I didn't care for them so was pinning. Now I am using the Wonder Clips - they work great!

Jim 03-03-2013 02:21 PM

I LOVE the wonder clips!!! Expensive even at 50% off but well worth it. I have 100 of them and may get 100 more

IrishNY 03-03-2013 02:32 PM

I use hair clips and have no problem with them. Think I bought them at a dollar store.

QuiltE 03-03-2013 02:49 PM

There are different sizes of hair clips.
Some of the hair clips are pretty much a match for those.

I just watch for them at the $ $tore and have been able to get a dozen for a $.
Besides ... some of them are much prettier than the silver of these ... so they are kind of fun when I am using them.

An vital part of my arsenal of binding supplies!
... no more pinning and they do a more even job of holding everything in place when I set to handstitch.

I've used both hair clips and the Dritz clips -- don't see ANY difference. I'm too cheap to buy the wonder clips and am happy with these.

I use hair clips. I have no need for those expensive clips, and I only use 3 or 4 at a time. Just make sure you don't leave them in the quilt for extended periods of time. I have a friend who left her clips on a binding for a couple of years and they rusted on her quilt. :(

SittingPretty 03-03-2013 05:35 PM

I use the hair clips, too. If I need something stronger or bigger, then I use clothespins. The both work great for me, so think I'll keep on using them.

SherriB 03-03-2013 05:54 PM

I starting using the binder clips when I started quilting. They have worked great for me. I have arthritis in my left hand and they have never been hard to open and use. Recently I found the Wonder Clips on Amazon for a great price. I bought two packages of 50 but haven't used them yet.

Lara122 03-03-2013 07:25 PM

I use binder clips. I only use two. I scoot them down as I go . . . like leapfrog, I guess. =))

TeresaS 03-03-2013 07:41 PM

wonder clips are my favorite, they now have jumbo size. I could not get the hair clips to stay. I am sure it was just me. wonderclips are well worth the money and I purchased mine when Joanns had a 50 coupon.

nativetexan 03-03-2013 07:47 PM

I love the silver binding clips. i have lots of them and use them all the time. easy to use and strong too. not sure about comparing with hair clips though.

JanieW 03-03-2013 07:49 PM

If you use the ladder stitch you don't need to use any clips or pins.

BellaBoo 03-03-2013 09:08 PM

The clips labeled quilting do hold stronger then regular hair clips. I use to use them. I don't use anything but Clover Wonder Clips now.

rebeljane 03-03-2013 09:14 PM

I fold my binding to the back and then pin from the front, that way I don't get stabbed and thread does not get caught up in the pins

Ditto! Love them too, and have not had a problem with them. I've left them on for quite awhile, and never had a problem!

I have posted this before. You can save your money and not buy any clips if you just iron your binding. Sew your binding on like normal, then turn it towards the back and press a nice seam all the way around. The only place you will need to pin is on the mitered corners. It does take a few minutes to iron but it sure is better then pins or clips.

DOTTYMO 03-04-2013 12:36 AM

The box of clips from a quilting shop we found is cheaper than buying from chemist for hair. I find they hold in better than straight pins but I do like the wonderclipswhich grip fabric. You only need a few to but binding in place 12 inches in front of stitching. Although in desperation have used bulldog clips.

Lizzytish 03-04-2013 02:58 AM

I use the binding clips also. I don't like pinning bindings. I use about 4-5 of them and move them down as I sew.

alleyoop1 03-04-2013 05:04 AM

For me the binding clips are easier to put on and take off then the hair clips. My arthritic hands find it easier.

This is what I do. I went to a binding class with a national teacher and this was her hint: buy a package of 10 and share it with 4 other quilting buddies .... or use only 1 and share with 9 quilting buddies. It works well for me even with my arthritis. I do admit, though, that I only h and bind really special quilts. Otherwise I machine bind.

Why use clips to hold the binding in place? I just fold the binding over, take about 5 stitches, pull the thread tight, and then fold another little bit and repeat the process. I don't have to pin and remove the pins, clip and remove the clips, etc. it is so much easier this way.

I went to the stationary dept at Walmart and bought the little binder clips that are used to clip paper together. The were about $4 and work very well, and for less money.

Lyncat 03-05-2013 04:02 AM

I am also a big fan of the Wonder Clips.

kuntryquilter 03-05-2013 04:22 AM

I use the hair clips with no problem.

bobbiesboutique 03-05-2013 04:26 AM

I use regular hair clips I would rather use the extra money it would cost to buy wonderfully and buy fabric or a ruler

maryellis 03-05-2013 04:48 AM

I use the small and mini binder clamps. From WalMart got 70 for 3.00 they work great

Handcraftsbyjen 03-05-2013 04:50 AM

I love the wonder clips. However, I also have the girls hair clips.

Julie in NM 03-05-2013 04:54 AM

I like color so love the hair clips. lol

MamaHen 03-05-2013 05:00 AM

I like the wonder clips, have also use the hair clips, but prefer the wonder clips over the hair clips. For those that don't even pin or clip, that's great, but for those that do pin or clip use whats easiest for you.

quilttiger 03-05-2013 05:01 AM

I switched to Wonder clips from hair clips when they first came out. Love them! When I need to hem a garment by hand, those hair clips are great for holding the hem in place. So I use them both, lol. I may get a package of the jumbo wonderclips...with a 50% coupon, of course!

DebbE 03-05-2013 05:03 AM

I'm too frugal to buy something on Amazon that I can get at the dollar store...the hair clips work great. Leaves $$ for other things, like fabric!

Jo Anne B. 03-05-2013 05:04 AM

Absolutely prefer the Wonder clips over hair clips.

pamesue 03-05-2013 05:05 AM

Wonder Clips for me....love them..I clip a whole and just sew ....sew....sew
will never use anything else!

I love these!! From small to large projects. No more getting stuck by my pins anymore!

quiltmom04 03-05-2013 05:19 AM

I've used the hair clips but don't like how you have to bend and snap them on and off. With the wonder clips, they just open and close. Plus they have a flat edge to when you're on the sewing machine, it tends to lay generally flat as they come up to the needle. But to each his own!

piepatch 03-05-2013 05:25 AM

I use the hair clips, and I don't have many, because I only use a few at a time, then move them down.

JoyceRowell 03-05-2013 05:43 AM

I LOVE the wonder clips!!! My first time using them my binding came out perfect on both side of the quilt. You can tell where your seam will be before you even sew it.

kydeb 03-05-2013 06:01 AM

Wonder clips are wonderful!!!

gramquilter2 03-05-2013 06:05 AM

I use the hairclips and really like them. I have the binding clips but don't think they hold as well as the hair clips.
