binding foot on video

Im confused after watching the scalloped border video by Missouri quilt co, it looks like they bound the quilt with a regular foot, not a walking foot. Does anyone do this? is there more control with a walking foot or without? This was not a machine with a built in walking foot.

I don't use a walking foot at all. Don't own one. I use a regular foot for all of my sewing and use a 'scant' 1/4" setting on my machine. I've never had an issue. My machine (viking) has an auto tension setting and self adjusts for whatever weight/thickness I am sewing. Love that feature!

Thats a nice feature but if you dont have a machine that does that, i wonder if you could bind with a regular foot, if its better

I have done it both ways and most usually just use a regular foot. To lazy to change the foot.

Try it both ways and see which one works for you. It's a choice that's going to be based on how well your machine handles a thicker sandwich with/without a walking foot, and your personal preference. I bind with a walking foot, but HATE piecing with it, however, I've read lots of posts where folks always use it to piece. It's quilting so whatever works for you!

I do use my walking foot to put on binding but it is bulkier than a regular foot. I wonder if Jenny used a smaller foot so you could see what she was doing in the video?

I have never used a walking foot to attach my binding but then keep in mine that I prefer to hand stitch my binding to the back.

If I'm using my Juki, I use the walking foot, if using my Ruby I don't need a walking for as machine sense different thickness.

I think this is a personal preference situation, I use a walking foot most of the time. I think you have to do what feels best to you.

I sometimes forget to change to my walking foot to apply the first stage of the binding. Using my regular foot seems to allow me to keep a better seam allowance on this part.
I finish by hand.

My Brother machine also has an auto sensor for thickness. I would suggest if you have trouble with your machine not feeding thick or bulky seams through easily to use a walking foot. The walking foot's feeddogs and you machine bed feeddogs will make it easier to sew the bulk.

I don't use a walking foot for binding and I don't hand sew anything. I use my regular foot to sew the binding to the back of the quilt, press the binding up then over the front with the edge just at the seam line, then use my zipper foot to sew the binding to the front. The seam will be in the ditch on the back and not show. I made a 36" square wall hanging a few weeks ago and the binding took less than an hour start to finish.

I use the 1/4" foot for binding. It works fine. I think that we all have slightly different techniques to do the same thing.

thanks, I'll try it without the next time and see how it goes then. Cari, do you stitch in the ditch on the front part of your quilt ? or is it a blanket stitch?
