I always seem to end up with too much binding...is there a formula to figure out what yardage to use for making continuous binding per size of quilt?

Measure the circumference of the quilt (or 2X length + 2x width) then add a bit to finagle where the seams meet. I always have too much too and now I keep all the binding pieces together for the next scrap quilt.

Add all the sides of your quilt together (its perimeter), add 15-18” to that number (for miters, seams and overlap), divide the total by 40 (WOF after washing) and round up to the next whole number. That’s how many strips you will need to cut. Multiply that by the width of the cut binding strip you want and divide that number by 36 (inches in a yard). That will give you the yardage (as a decimal) you need for your binding.

So as a formula, I’d say something like this: (((QP+18 )/40)xCBW)/36=BY where QP=quilt perimeter. CBW=cut binding width, and BY=binding yardage

Formulas like that make me happy :D Math teacher?

I am about ready to do the binding on a quilt for a gf who is a BC survivor...I'll let you know how close I get my measurement. Pix to come soon.

Thanks for the tips. :D

I never measure binding, I sew strips together until I think it will be enough and then rope it around the quilt to see. When I have enough, I make the binding.

There is a Binding Chart on www.quiltbug.com for bias and straight binding.

That's a cryptoclostic formula to us newbie.

Better have more than not enough. I really hate when I'm short on binding.

I figure it is better to have too much compared to not enough. Nothing worse then being 5 inches short on your binding.
