I machine stitch mine on the front and then hand stitch on the back.

I, too, like the hand stitching of the binding to the back. That part of hand stitching doesn't seem to hurt my hands, and it just feels relaxing.

I use straight grain binding (unless edge is wavy). Sometimes all by machine, sew on the back and flip to front and top stitch, or if doing it by hand, sew to the front and flip to the back and hand stitch.

my mother can do it totally by machine and it looks great. she sews it to the back first then pulls to the front and top stitches. i can't. she tries to teach me but i still cant do it. i do the glue binding by sharon schomburg and handstitch the back. which i hate.

I usually have the back of my quilt 1and 1/2 inches bigger than the front trimmed and the fold to the front and either hand stitch or machine stitch the binding ... works great!

I never handstitch if I can help it. I have a bad shoulder and I hate handwork. It is too painful. So I do all my binding on the machine.

I always hand stitch my bindings to the back. Sewing the binding down by hand is my favorite part of making a quilt. It gives me the sense of really being connected to the quilt.
