Oh, forgot to mention that I pin in the ditch from the front... and then look on back to see where that came out and adjust as needed. The pinning takes longer than the actual sewing but it's an important step you can't skip.

I have seen a number of posts on this Forum about Binding, hand or machine finishing and IMO it is all down to precise measurements.

All my newbies can do a wonderful binding with "poke your eye out corners" with the method I have shown them, done with all tips I have gleaned from the internet.

My method: Cut our binding to an exact 2 3/8" or 2 1/2" and trim down. Use a overlock foot and stitch, or if you don't have do a 1/4" stepped zig-zag stitch all around the squared trimmed down quilt. Sew the binding on the quilt with a 3/8" seam, important.

Now when you fold over the binding you will see that the front and back seams exactly match so the choice is yours, hand slip stitch the back down or, as I do, machine the binding down with a nice stitch that your machine can do, for example a zig-zag or blanket stitch. My machine doesn't need to use a walking foot but use one if you are happier with it.

I use 2 1/2" strips, folded and pressed. Sew to back of your Quilt with 3/8" seam allowance, Fold binding over to the front and use a Decrative Stitch to sew it down. I have tried quite a few stitches, as long as they are light and airy (not too tightly sewn) like the feather stitch etc. Try them on place mats or something small and see if you like the results.
