Binding Problem; help!!
 

I'm finishing my second quilt this long weekend but ran into a problem. After stitching my binding by machine, when I turn and use the blind stitch, two or three segments of the binding are slitting on the stitch line on the right side of the quilt:(. Is this poor quality fabric or something else?

When I do this, it is usually one of two issues:
1. I ironed the binding not exactly in the center or got off in spots, and then did not catch it.
2. My quarter inch wavered and I didn't catch it.

The fabric is actually splitting. I'm sick about it. It was yardage I purchased at JO Ann fabrics for sashing and binding.. Now I am worried about gifting it to my daughter, as had been the plan. One machine wash, I'd be afraid to look!! Do you think it might help with strengthening the seams if I did a blanket stitch over all those seams? It's not the best solution but it might salvage all these hours of work.

I think I would replace the binding. Then would probably wash the quilt - if the fabric is really poor then it will fall apart whether you do a blanket stitch or not. is it a black fabric? Sometimes the chemicals used in black fabric are very caustic. I had a friend who pieced a quilt, took it to the LA who called and said it was splitting as she quilted it. The whole thing got thrown away.

I would take it back to JoAnn's and show them what is happening. Is it doing it on the sashing too, or just the binding? I would take the binding off and get something else.

I agree with taking the binding off. Lots of work but should be worth it.

I agree with Nammie...replace the binding. Then finish and wash. OR Remove binding, serge or zigzag the unfinished edge of the quilt and wash. See what happens with the sashing. Better to know now what's going to happen. If the sashing is ok, then get something different for the binding and finish.
