Some of the books that I have say that you should cut the binding strips on the bias. But then some videos I've watched and other books just do regular straight cuts (sorry, not sure what those are called). Does it matter which way you do it? Doing it the non-bias way does seem easier, but is there a downside?

if the quilt is straight edges i use straight cut binding strips.

if the quilt is round, scalloped, other odds angles/edges i used bias cut binding strips.

the main reason for bias strips is "stretch-ability" so, if you need to stretch your binding (to go around a corner, or other odd shape) bias is the way to go.if you are just doing straight sides and mitered corners, straight strips work just fine. another consideration would possibly be 'fraying' if your fabric frays, making those straight edges hard to work with the bias strips will remedy this :)

I do non-bias. Lots easier. I wouldn't have the patience to cut the strips sideways :)

Okay, thank goodness. I did bias cuts for my tree skirt (which it needed, because of the round edges), but oh my gosh, it was such a pain. I didn't have enough space, and my olfa cutting mat wasn't quite large enough, so I had to put two mats together, and my ruler wasn't long enough, and it was just a headache. I was envisioning having to go through all that headache for this next quilt that I'm finishing up, and was not looking forward to it.

My next question is, do you know of any good tutorials or videos of how to do mitered corners?
