binding on scalloped quilt
 

I have a silly question, but I have been thinking about it and confused myself :)

When figure how much binding I will need I add the length and width measurements and use that figure.

If I scallop the border will that add to how much binding I will need? or am I over thinking this

yes it will add to it... you'll have to measure along the curves of the length and width.

It depends on how deep your scallops are. I've done two scalloped bindings.

The first one had very deep scallops, so I measured the length & width, then added half the length again to the binding. I also made sure I had a couple extra binding strips just in case.

The second quilt I did had fairly shallow scallops. I measured length & width, cut one extra binding strip just in case, but I didn't need it, I had enough to go around.

You need to add extra to you binding but remember that it must be BIAS binding so it sill lay flat over the curves.

Measure each scallop from valley to valley multiply that by number of scallops....add a few inches for insurance......

I ran into a good tip on Linda Franz's blog when I made a scalloped border. She's the Inklingo lady and has a good tutorial on scalloped borders. To avoid having a seam in the valley of the scallop, which makes it difficult to turn, don't sew the binding strips together before you start sewing them to the quilt. As you get near a valley and it looks like your seam will hit it, cut a little off that strip and add your next strip. It slows you down when adding the binding, but it's worth the little extra time.
