Binding Seam allowance

I took a comfort quilt from our guild home to bind. The binding provided was 3" didn't pay attention and did a 3/8" seam instead of 1/4" I liked it. Easier to see with the walking foot and I believe it will hold up better. It's a vunerable part of the quilt why not make it sturdier?

So my guild is having our annual show judged this year. I'm happy about it, I'd like an honest opinion. What do judges look for in the binding?

Thanks for any help

I don't think they look at size. Consistency is the thing. Even on both front and back. The binding should be full (i.e. batting goes all the way to the edge). The miters are stitched. Areas are neat where strips were joined. Traditional judges want it hand sewn to the back. From what I've read, the judges will often have a few quilts that are equally well pieced and quilted and use the binding quality as the tie breaker.
