Binding/Silk Thread Question
 

I am thinking of using silk thread to hand stitch the back of my binding because I am using batik fabric and I think it will go more smoothly this way. Has anyone used silk thread for this purpose or is there any reason that I should not do this?

I use silk exclusively now because i use it for hand appliqué and don't want to spend $ on another type of thread for binding. It works well for me.

I cannot think of one reason why you could not. Silk is strong and if you make small stitches, they practically disappear. I LOVE it for hand applique..I use straw needles. They are long and very thin. I do have to thread them before dark, so I thread 4 of 5. When those are done, I'm finished for the night! Darn trifocals!

I always hand sew with silk thread it disappears so well into the fabric and leaves a fantastic finish.

i've been binding my quilts with silk thread for years- i love using it; it is so fine, smooth and goes through the fabrics so nicely. I also use silk threads for my appliques and for English paper piecing. i'd use it for everything if I had it on larger spools & it was a bit less expensive.

Never thought about using silk thread for the binding. You ladies are a wealth of information!

I want to use silk thread to put on the binding of a quilt, both putting it on with the machine on one side and blind stitching it by hand on the back. It seems that should work, if I read this thread. But what size needle should I use in my sewing machine for silk thread? I've only done hand applique with silk before, so I'm not sure.

That's so ironic! I was just wondering about using silk thread myself :)

I haven't but it is important on the type of needle you use when dealing with batiks !!
