Okay so I have to confess...I have made 5 quilts and have not made a binding for any of them. I guess it is because I don't understand how to do it.

My Grandmother started to teach me how to quilt. She has since come down with Alztimers and does not even remember quilting. There is no one to show me how to do it now.

Can you help?

donnajean 06-07-2011 09:57 AM

Try Goggling "quilt binding". There are lots of video tutorials out there now.

Look for "binding the angel" on youtube. Its very easy

Once you get through 1 or 2, you won't put them off anymore. I LOVE doing the binding now after reading all the tutorials on this site!

You can go here - http://www.crazymomquilts.blogspot.com
She has a great binding tutorial. That's how I learned to bind.

I am with them. Watch a video and once that you learn the technique, you will love to bind! I love the way binding "finishes" the quilt.

I was right in the same boat you are in at one time. I found a great book, that I finally understood. Now I love to finish the beautys that I created. Keep searching, you will find your ninch. Really...Wish I was there to help you.

I love binding! I actually do binding for two local women who hate it. :)

All the links you were given are good ones.

if you don' tfeel you can get the hang of doing one long binding with mitered corners, you can simply add binding to the sides and then the top and bottom individually. you just cut binding (i cut 2 1/2 inches and fold wrong sides together) make the cut at least 1 inch longer than the length of your quilt sides or top or bottom. fold over excess on each end of binding piece, fold together and lay on the top of your quilt, raw edges meeting. sew and flip to teh back and hand stitch down. (some sew by machine also).
many quilts are done this way, so don't fret too much. try it on one quilt top while you read up on doing mitered borders on binding.

The hardest part of binding is joining the two ends. I got The Binding Tool from the Missouri Star Quilt Company (I think it was $8) and watched their video tutorial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ex2Pa...layer_embedded)

Now every quilt I make has professional looking binding on it!

alikat110 06-07-2011 07:38 PM

It's easier than you think.

Baloonatic 06-08-2011 04:32 AM

Binding...my favorite part! Wish you were closer, I'd be happy to show ya!

didi 06-08-2011 04:32 AM

Glad you ask this question, I don't know how to bind either. Hope one of these video will help. I'm one of these that have to see it, to do it.

#1piecemaker 06-08-2011 05:05 AM

I'll add my two cents and say there are some great tutorials on this board for anyone who needs help with anything. Just hit search at the top of the page!!

Rose Marie 06-08-2011 06:48 AM

Ive tried all the different methods even glue but went back to using pins because I can see the stitch line under the binding as I go along. Pins can stick you but it does make for a more accurate sewing line when you do it by machine.
I refuse to hand sew.

Deborahlees 06-08-2011 07:01 AM

I watched the video on the binding tool....excellent, how cleaver us Quilters are....will look to buy the tool.

milikaa1 06-08-2011 08:03 AM

I did the same thing, for some reason it scares me to try something new in case I fail, but, I braved it LOL and tried it and I enjoy it, with each quilt it gets a little better, I figure I am only human and what is the worse that can happen....I watch alot of You Tube also. I say just start to learn and go for it.

cpfrog 06-08-2011 08:09 AM

Local quilt shop? Someone must be able to get you started! You can view those videos and tutorials - which are super-great on this board - but seeing it in person and having someone answer your questions, right then and there, is the best. Wish I was closer... but OH is a stretch. Good luck!

And my prayers for your grandmother and your family. Alzheimer's is not easy to get through, but know you are not alone, esp. if you educate yourself.

RAChhap 06-08-2011 01:01 PM

Another excellent step by step tutorial is by Susan Schamber. She has great tips that really work-don't be afraid to use the school glue, I tried it on 6 or 7 scraps before I got up enough nervce to do it on an actual quilt & now I don't think I'd do a binding any other way.

also check out http://www.jaybirdquilts.com. she just posted a tute today on bias binding to go with her previous detailed lessons on binding.

Go to a local shop during a good sale! Introduce yourself to as many of the ladies there as you can and tell them your problem.
You will find help and perhaps new friends!

I moved half across the country a few times - and did this!
It works!

This is the type of binding I do. You may want to try it.

Awesome I learned something to. I made my own binding today with out looking at anything. I hope I did it right. Off to go watch you tube and look at the other suggestions.

I had a lot of trouble with the glue method, even though Sharon makes it look so easy. Like anything else, I guess it takes some practice. I used too much and when I heat set it with the iron, it spread out to the width of the binding and stuck there and I couldn't hand stitch through it. I didn't want to wash the whole quilt with all the raw edges exposed, so I did it by hand in the kitchen sink, a few inches at a time, rubbing the glue off between my fingers, which was hard to do because it was already dried and stiff. Thank goodness I had done only one side. Anyway, it was a mess and took forever; scrubbing it with my fingers also distorted the binding strips. Anyway, I will never do it again. I just pin it and stitch by hand and I'm good. Never stick myself either!

I use a combination of these three videos. You could use any one of these but since I had to teach myself as well (like you), I felt like I gained the most knowledge by watching all three.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buCKs...mbedded#at=298

first steps - I use this link to find out how to cut the binding and how to sew the binding strips together to form a continuous binding strip

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wprg5vzkuGw

I use this link for machine sewing the binding to both the front and the back ( she has a second video to this as well)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dauc...ature=youtu.be

last steps - I use this last link (only the end portion) to learn how join the two pieces at the end to create a smooth join.

I just did my first binding last week and found it so easy after watching these! Hope it helps :)

I just read this. I didn't mean to say that I'm good at doing this binding like I'm bragging. I meant to say that I'm good to go and everything is all good. I certainly don't want to come off looking like a braggart!

Gatormom3 06-10-2011 06:42 AM

The two best tips I received on binding were to cut it 2 1/4 inches instead of the typical 2 1/2 inches and to cut the overlap exactly the same as the width of the binding. My bindings now fit perfectly every time. I can't remember where I saw these two tips but I expect it was either here or in a link I found here. Good luck!!

When you cut the overlap exactly the same as the width of the binding, it will work no matter how wide your binding is. I do it all the time and never have a problem.
