binding

I am making a donate quilt. I want to bring the bottom fabric up over the top of quilt to make the binding. How much do I leave the bottom fabric. Would it be 2 inches or 2 1/2 inch. Hope this is clear. My head is not working right. Just got out of the hospital with the flu. Yes, I did get the flu shot his year.

I usually only leave an inch. This gives you about a quarter inch binding. Here's a good tutorial:

The problem with bringing the back yo the front is, the backing must be the exact size of the front or you will end up with some pleats at the edge. Try pinning the backing tO the front all around to see if they match first before sewing.

I'm thinking of doing that with the front to the back. mainly due to hating the backing fabric. quilt is 100 inches now and too big for my bed. I had it quilted years ago and never got binding on it. must cut down so thinking of folding yellow border over to the back to bind.

To me it is much easier to just put a regular binding on a quilt.

I use this method a lot. I start out leaving a couple inches larger on backing that front. It is easier to trim than wish you had more fabric to turn under. I don't worry if the batting is a bit larger than front as it will he hidden under the batting. Have fun trying different amounts to turn under for binding, then you can decide with works best for you.

At church we leave 2" all the way around and the backing acts like a final border.
