So far hand sewn. I haven't attempted machine yet.

I always hand stitch the bindings to the back of the quilt. I tried machine stitching on a small wall hanging and just didn't like the look of it on either the front or the back. I am RELIGIOUS about double stitching every 5th stitch when binding the back by hand. Works great for me

The only problem with folding the back over to front to make the binding is that you only have a single layer of fabric for the binding on the edges which get the most wear. I have done this a few times and though it looks cute on some, I prefer the regular binding. If you have enough fold over you could fold enough to make it a double layer of binding. I haven't tried this yet, as I just thought of it now.

I always hand stitch binding to the back. Actually, it is one of my favorite quilting things to do. Looks really good, too.

I also machine stitch the binding on the front and hand sew on the back. However, I do one more thing. I insert a 1/2 inch strip of the batting inside the binding to make it nice and filled out. At several of our quilt shows the judges seem to like this affect. I usually get a good grading on this on the critique from the judge.

i do machine stitching on both sides <---- dont like handstitching

I do like many others have already said... machine stitch on the front, and hand sew on the back. Provides a very nice and even finish.

KiwiQuilter 04-19-2010 10:18 PM

I agree with you Kay - nothing worse than "skinny" binding :)

mem123 04-19-2010 10:26 PM

I've done some by hand and some by machine.

I am very much new to quilting, I have done the march doll quilt, and I did the pull to the front, the one you said was easy, peasy took me all day to get those darn corners to match. :? :? God bless. Penny

I never heard of the 1/2"strip of batting. Thanks for sharing.

If it's a quilt for my kids, I generally use backing fabric and pull over to top and stitch to top as binding (easy-peasy and fairly bullet proof)... Any thoughts?

I machine the front and hand stitgh the back.

Thanks for the websites! & the info!

What I have done so far , I have machine sewn the binding. Not to say I would not hand sew something that was calling out to be hand sewn!

I've done 3 on the machine and thus far prefer to machine stitch to the top and then hand stitch to the back as I can miter the corners better that way. Most of my quilting friends do NOT hand sew anything and do it all on the machine and theirs do look nice. I'd say it's personal preference and where your own talent tends to lie.

I have a Bernia, that has a wonderful serpentine stitch that works great for machine sewing binding... Mostly I use it for charity quilts, but it really is pretty enough to use on any quilt.... for those of you without a Bernina it is a wavy zig-zag... I am sure other machines have a similar stitch.
