Binding on a tied quilt?

Hi! I have a question. Do you think I NEED to put a binding on a "memory quilt" (kids' clothes) that I have bordered with denim? or just assume the denim will be tough enough etc? I guess a binding would look nice but not sure if binding is or isn't usually done on a simple tied quilt. It is huge, 96x96 and very heavy. If you do recommend binding, should I use the denim or do you think the regular backing fabric would work?
Thanks!!
Carla

Personally, I would bind it with the backing fabric. I would think you need to keep the quilt from coming apart.

I would think you need to finish the edges in some way-
all of the tied quilts our sewing group makes have bindings. The backing material would probably be fine, if you like it showing on the front of the quilt.
I made one denim quilt where is stitched 3 lines of stitches ( close together- 3/4” in from the edges- then clipped every 1/4” up to the stitching lines giving it a frayed- chenille like edge.

I would never make a quilt or comforter without a binding. Would never look finished without it.

My first tied quilt was a king size bed quilt and I absolutely did a binding, it’s 22 years old and going strong.

Good luck, binding is the way to go-definitely.

If you made the quilt envelope style. (eg, layered the quilt top and backing wrong sides out and then turned right sides out), I have simple stitched around the whole thing to stabilize the edges. Worked on the quilt I made to be tied. It is a little hard to make sure the top fabric is on the top side and the bottom fabric only shows on the bottom side....but it works.
