DH just purchased my Valentine's/birhtday present but he doesn't know it, yet. They are 5 days apart. :( It is a 1929 National sewing machine and it's a treadle. the belt needs to be replaced BUT I got a box of attachments with it. I, however, did not get an owner's manual and have no idea how to thread it. It's a double spool machine whereby one spool is for the top thread and one spool where the bobbin would normally be. Liking that feature but will need to find owner's manual somehow, somewhere. National was absorbed in 1953 and ceased to exist period in 1957. Anyway, here are some pictures. The serial # is H58689 and the bobbin plate has some pitting on it so some of the patent numbers aren't completely visible. Gal at LQS thinks the sewing shop will be able to get me the belt.

If anyone has an owner's manual or knows of website(s) where I might be able to get a PDF file, I'd appreciate the information.

I did a search on this machine and came up with this website:
http://www.antiquequiltdating.com/no...ewmachine.html

Scroll down to find your machine. If you have a darning foot for it, according to this website you are really lucky!

chris_quilts 02-04-2010 05:46 PM

Forogt to say that the cabinet is in decent shape. Some TLC and I think it'll be good. Saw a Singer, treadle, today at antique store in a beautiful cabinet. Wanted $350 for it. The machine had quite a bit of rust and the cabinet was a very light wood but extremely pretty and decorative. Am wondering if sopmeone stripped the original finish off thereby lightening it and the just revarnished it. Lots of details in the decorations and three drawers per side but no way would I pay $350 for it. I bought mine for $50 and got a deal.

I have the bobbin cover and was told by ladies at the charity's quilt shop (where I bought it) that it's a double spool machine.

Ooops! Didn't edit my post soon enough. Check the website I posted above; I think I have seen this woman at WI quilt shows. She has contact info on her website, and may be able to help you with the manual or at least threading info. Scroll down the website page to see the picture and info about the National Two Spool she has. You are right; the case is for the spool.

I may spring it on him soon to save him the trouble of getting me something else. Aren't I considerate??

Lovely machine! You are so considerate :D

Beautiful machine lucky you!

I bought my 1st treadle machine recently! Another member of this forum suggested needlebar.org and there is treadleon.net - these sites have tons of information about antique machines. I hope you can find a link to a manual thru those sites.

My machine is a National, also. Mine is late 1800's - early 1900's. It has a vibrating shuttle - I hadn't seen one of those before - the shuttle looks like a bullet. I am in the process of cleaning and oiling the machine - it is running smoothly, but the stitch regulator is stuck - stuck on the longest stitch, of course. I can't wait to use it - I want to make at least one quilt with this machine ---- I really hope to use it a lot.

My machine did come with 2 belts, a bunch of needles, a box of attachments, and the manual - I got a another booklet that has drawings of the attachments and describes what they do. My manual also has a list of all the machine parts and what they cost.

I'm so excited for you! Enjoy your Birthday present! :D

She's reallly pretty!
Enjoy!

Lucky you!!

Charlee 02-05-2010 06:10 AM

What a beauty!! :) Happy Birthday and Happy V-day!

Needlebar.org is a GREAT site! They helped me to ID my machine for what she is...which is NOT what the serial number and the Singer website had me believing! ;) (Hannah is actually made in 1912, not 1879...and is a Singer 9W.)

Anyway....you got a steal...isn't it fun? What are you going to name her?

Her name is Josephine - Josie for short. She's named after my grandmother. Neither she nor my mother would approve of giving her a name let alone that name but she neeeds an olfashioned name and that's what came to mind. I will check out needlebar.org and thanks for the information.

I'm envious of the manual and the belts but apparently you can still get belts thru Singer for them. Hopefully one of your 2 sites will be able to help with a manual. Thanks for the information.

Google 1929 National Sewing Machine. There are a few sites to look at. One of them is somehow connected to the Smithsonian Institute - saw it mentioned in the upper right hand corner of the page.

ITS A BEAUTY! Good luck!

Marcia 02-06-2010 07:38 AM

Happy Birthday and Happy Valentine's Day to you!!!! What a gorgeous machine!!!

I hope you are able to find a manual and any parts you need to get this beauty up and working for you. Miss Josie deserves to be loved again.

Welcome to the board!! I used to live in Leavenworth (1989-1990 and again 1992-1996) but I was a X-stitcher then and not a quilter. I did shop at Quilter's Quarters for fabric for other projects and I loved Peddler's Wagon in Parkville.

amma 02-06-2010 11:31 AM

WOW!!! DH should be very happy that you did all of the work for him :D:D:D
Josephine is a real beauty!!! I can't wait to see the quilt that you two create together :D:D:D

Marcia; I may have known you as a cross stitcher as that's what I did then also. I worked forever on a motorcycle for a buddy and then started a unicorn for hubby. That one's a UFO!! Small world and hoping you like Georgia. Where's your husband stationed - Ft Benning or Ft Stewart?

Sandra Craig 02-06-2010 11:39 AM

oh wow that is a beauty!!! I wish I had room for an antique machine.

Grammie Sharon 02-06-2010 01:44 PM

Your machine is beautiful. I have a really dumb question. I have a treadle machine that was given to me in our garage. I'm not sure if it works or not, but here is my question. Do you use your to sew with? piecing, quilting or what? Told you this was a dumb question.Do you find any difference when you sew with it.

My machine needs a new belt before I can even start to sew with it but there are many people on this board who use treadles for sdewing their quilts even the wuilting portion of their quilts. Lostn51 is a good example of a "treadler." He is an awesome quilter to boot. Hope this answers your question.
Chris

Well isn't your husband just the nicest guy! Hope you let him know how much you appreciate him, especially since he got you just what you wanted.

Nice present. My treadle cabinet sits in the hall I put my Aunt's Singer machine on it. She passed away over a year ago. Sometimes I see her wandering about and a faint small of cigarette smoke is left behind. She was 84 when she went on her journey.

Beautiful machine and cabinet. Does it work and, if so, do you use it?

My Aunt told me the machine works, as a matter of fact I think I still have the tag saying when it was serviced. I don't have it hooked up, I have always wanted a cabinet like this so when I spied one on Craigslist for 20 bucks including the original sewing machine (circa 1930's) I grabbed it. I still have that machine to though it's not working, pieces are missing. But it came with a treasure trove of old parts like a ruffler, a bias tape thingy. I put the old machine head up on the shelf that runs the length of our hall and living room.

My husband is now retired and so we get to live in a "civilian community!" We are smack in the middle of GA (Forsyth) and loving it!!! Now my husband is a consultant and works part of his day at Ft MacPherson in Atlanta. (There is also Ft Gillem and Ft Gordon in GA---we love our Army posts here :-) )

You a got a real bargain and beautiful machine. And how thoughtful of your sweet hubby to get you something so thrilling. For years I would go get my own xmas, birthday, etc presents and my honey would just give me money....when got home I would wrap them very pretty and put on the card "To the one I love, from the one who loves you" or "to my sweet honey from your darling". Always brought smiles to my face when time to open them....lol

chris_quilts 02-13-2010 03:09 PM

Lovely people on the board: Just an update. It is a double spool, which i knew, byut thought the bobbin spool cover had been lost. It is intact and was able to download a manual from neeedlebar.org. I'm so excited by this turn of events. Chris
