"Birthing" is where you layer top up, batting, then backing down, and sew all the way around the edges leaving a slightly larger than hand length opening, then turn the whole thing right side out and hand stitch the opening closed.
Some folks prefer this to putting on binding. For me, it is not.

Please DO NOT FOLLOW MY DIRECTIONS here. My layering order is all WRONG. You will be unstitching the whole thing to correct it if you do. Please see the thread "Okay, I'll bite..." by redstillettos" for the correct order.
