Biscuit or Puff quilt question
 

I am currently working on a biscuit quilt and am ready to start stuffing them. I am stumped as to how full I am supposed to stuff them! If you have made one, can you tell me if you stuffed the squares until they were slightly firm or did you leave them squishy? I'm not going to stuff them like I would a pin cushion or a stuffed animal. I'm sure that would be too firm. I bought some really nice polyfill at Joann's ($8/bag) It is Silky Soft by Fairfield and it is labeled "Ultra Plush Fiber" http://www.fairfieldworld.com/produc...ster-fiberfill It has a wonderful silky feel to it. My concern is that if I stuff it too little, it will become really flat after I wash it. I just don't know what is the right amount!!! :confused:

i would say that it has more to do about the fiber than the fullness. how about making a test puff, stuff it, wash it, and see how it comes out.

My DD wants one of those. Where did you find the pattern? Will watch for how the stuffing works out.

it really is a personal choice- when i did mine for my brother i stuffed them fairly (full) but not firm- but his is a denim quilt---
he brought me a whole garbage bag full of denim pockets-removed from his work aprons- and wanted me to make him a quilt with them- i stuffed the pockets then sewed them together- they were like little throw pillows- squishy-but full.
I would think it depends on the look you want- and who it is for- some people may like them flatter than others.

Imade mine squishy, sew and stuff a few, sew them tog. Then you'll see what i mean. Have fun

I would advise under-stuffing. I made a baby quilt out of puff biscuits years ago. I didn't stuff the biscuits like a pincushion, but did stuff them fairly full. After I had sewed all the biscuits together, the whole thing was too bumpy and stiff for any use I could think of (except maybe for a cat cushion).

I have made about 10 biscuit quilts and believe me, you don;t want to fill them up very much. They get very hard to sew together and sew the rows together. I think my squares were 4 1/2" top square and 3 1/2" bottom square. They look gorgeous stuffed ful but are not usable for anything but to look at. Most homes are too warm now days to need them for warmth. My book said to use polyester fiberfil. They are still heavy.

My first quilt was a puff/biscuit quilt that I made to take with me to college...39 years ago. If I remember right, I used layers of batting squares, I think 3 per biscuit. I remember my dad going with me to buy the fabric. I have a picture somewhere of the quilt...but it has been gone for years...didn't stand up too well to washing over the years.
