Black Fabric
 

What do you do to your black fabric so it won't fade. I've made several items and the black always lightens after a couple of washings. Is there a brand that is better than others? Thanks

keep it out of the sun- wash in cold water with gentle detergent-
just like all fabrics---not all blacks are created the same-
i have had good luck with Kona Black; Benartex has a nice stable true dark black- the thin- already kind of lighter color blacks found at places like Joanne's tend to fade the fastest...and you never know what color they will fade to- some turn brown, some a shade of gray...some more reddish- depends on the (formula) used to achieve the black in the first place
but sunlight, warm/hot water & strong detergent will all fade blacks- and other dark colors

Eclipse by Blank Quilting is a true black. Put it next to Kona black and Kona reads grey next to it. I have both in my stash. I use Eclipse.

I used retayne on my black before cutting for a quilt. It did not look like it faded after finishing and washing quilt. Nothing came out onto color catchers.

One note on using Retayne ... its great for stopping running and bleeding... but it does make the fabric more sensative to fading in sunlight than untreated.

Michael Miller black is a wonderful, inky, jet black.

The down side - it shrank over two inches in width when I soaked it in hot water - but it's still a lovely, black black. Maybe a bit on the coarse side, but it feels nicer to me after it's been shrunk.

I like Kona black. Also seems to be a true black color.

Keepsake quilting carries one called Amish black, I have used it for years. I have never had a problem with it, I love the feel of it, washes beautifully. I use it in my quilting and also as linings for my crazy quilted vests
