The best black I have purchased so far is Michael Miller's Jet Black. It is darker and deeper than any other black I have tried. I have also worked with Kona black. The Kona has a much "meatier" hand to it that I don't like. It seems heavier than my quilting cottons and produced a lot of strings when I cut it into strips. I much prefer using Michael Miller's Jet Black, which seems to have a hand closer to that of my other quilting fabrics.

I have used kona black a lot. I really like it. As some have said it does have a heavier hand than some fabrics but it does pair just fine with my other quilting fabrics. I have also used Bella black and liked it too. I have been told that the Michael Miller jet black is the blackest black you can buy but have never used it or seen it. No one around here carries it.

I agree that Kona black is best:D I am working on a double wedding ring black with marbled colors. I have bought Kona black at different times as I have used the black on other projects and there is no difference in the colors. JAF is where I shop and only buy what I have coupons for:D

I too, like the Kona. However, Keepsake Q has an Amish black that I order all the time. It is a super saturated black that I really like.

I really like the Amish black fabric from Keepsake Quilting. It is really great quality and has never faded after repeatedly being washed.

Michael Miller black is not overdyed as are most other black fabrics.

I am really in the minority here, but I love the Moda Bella solids - use the black lots. I don't like anything about Kona and I can spot it a mile away. It has a coarser weave to it that I do not like. I love the hand of the bella line - I have lots of colors and they are all the same. I needed a certain color and was at Fabric Shack, and Kona had the color I needed, but I couldn't do it. This one was thin and the weave was distracting. I found Moda Bella at a quilt show a few years ago and fell in love.

Thank you for asking this question!!!!!!

I was wondering the same as well. I have been looking at black fabrics and actually intend to go with Moda Bella (I heard Kona is a bit scratchier to the touch, and I already have one with a bit of a coarser weave (Ikea Ditte)).
There is Bella Black and Bella Soft Black. Has anyone tried/seen them both? What's the difference? |
I like the Michael Miller Jet Black for the richness of color.
HOWEVER, I highly recommend shrinking it before cutting it because I had over two inches width of fabric shrinkage. (On three different pieces purchased at different times off different bolts of fabric.) |
