I am making quilts for grandkids and need some help from this board. One of my granddaughters is adopted--African-American. She's two and loves princess, fairy, girlie stuff. I don't make quilts that are too juvenile because I will probably only get to make one quilt for them, so I've avoided juvenile, Disney, etc. Sooo...I am wondering if anyone has seen any fabric that's quilt-quality material with a princess or fairy who is a princess/fairy of color??

sorry, of all the fairy prints i have seen, african american isn't one of them. actually most of them are some weird peachy tone unrelated to any human coloring. i know it is difficult to find any ethnic representation in quilt fabric. good luck.

I'll help you look! Be back.

been seaching for years for ethnic centered fabric...not much luck..I have seen some fabric with Black and White ballerinas...do not remember the fabric maker..sorry
you will have to search the web..good luck |
It is a polyester blend, but it is a step in the right direction.
http://blujay.com/item/African-ameri...150800-3496719 Also, check this site out. It appears to be a site for African American quilters. It includes a blog, so you might be able to post a question and get a response from someone. http://www.black-threads.com/ |
Does she like Tiana from the Princess and the Frog? It's a Disney print, but that's as close as I could come when I googled for my own daughter.
|
I found a whole blog dedicated to just African American Fabric. Did not read the whole thing but I bet it has good info on it. Good luck in your search.

Check out on the Disney Website for fabric and it seems like I remember seeing some when I was seaching for Tinkerbell fabric, there. Hope that you will be able to find some somewhere, if I come across any I will let you know.
|
One of the fairies from the Tinkerbell movies, Iridessa, is African. I'm pretty sure they have some Tinkerbell Fairies themed fabrics with all the fairies. Maybe you could fussy cut Iridessa and applique her? I know you want to avoid Disney, but just in case you can't find any other fabrics.

Joanns gets in some with a black princess or fairy (I can't remembeer which). They don't have it all the time.
|
What about Princess Jasmine?? :-D
|
Hope you find something. Maybe craftybear can surf...

Are there any of Disney's "Pocahontas" who seems to have been modeled on girls of several races? I'm going to look. How about the "American Girl" dolls? This fabric on ebay is disney but she's a lovely girl.
http://snowflake-designs.com/mystical-fairy-fabric.htm This site has a fairy fabric with black fairies/pink wings. I couldn't get the picture but this ebay site has a black barbie pillow fabric. If I wasn't so electronically challenged I'd send you a picture of it and maybe someone would know where to get it. I bought it years ago and didn't use it before my mixed blood grandchildren got too old. Someone out there should know of some material! Come on, gals (and guys) ... help out! |

Let me look. I have several none caucasian children and am always on the look out. I don't know about fairies but I had multi racial ice skaters before. I am not sure how old your little one is but you might want to reconsider the Disney frog princes even my adult male children like her and bought the video for their younger siblings. LOL I am so glad Disney finaly came out with her as all the others are rather pale. What pattern are you using? Kids are very senstive to the fact that many images are nothing but lightly brown colored caucasian images so it is nice to see some that would possibly reflect hair, darker skin tone and features too. Hard to find though and sometimes you just have to settle.

Besure to check the people and characters category too. I found many multi ethnic kids prints in there.

Have you thought about using Pigma pens or fabric pain and just paint over the skin color to make it a darker skin? That might work, but I'd practice first. Just a thought :)

That is something that I have never thought about is ethnic styled fabric but you would think that they would have several lines dedicated to them. I hope a manufacturer or designer sees this thread and they do something about it. I can see where there is a huge demand for this type of fabric.

Did you know the princess from the princess and the frog disney movie is black and there is one in the tinker bell movie
|
Just to add to the mix, there is a wonderful "Cinderella" out (several years now) with a white king, a black queen (played by Woopee Goldberg), an hispanic prince and I think an Asia Cinderella. It was the best we had seen and we played it until the VHS gave out. All the kids loved it (but then our family is made up of all those parts so perhaps they felt it was absolutely normal and right!), and it is!!!
