Kitsie,
I definitely like the leaves on the outside curve. Looks more natural as in nature.

Beautiful quilt. Good luck with choosing a design.

Charismah is a fmq artist - creative, talented and excellent. She has a web site too.

Anyway it was the one that has the center curl with feather/petals around it and I think it would look great in the big blocks. if you look at the round trivet tutorial, it uses the same quilt design. I love studying Charismah's work to see what designs I can make a stab at. I would say duplicate but no way am I ever going to be that good.

oh yea thats a beauty

hairquilt 04-18-2012 04:19 PM

Beautiful quilt-I would probably just handquilt around the flowers themselves & echo the flower pattern in the SB blocks! Love your quilt!

gigi4419 04-18-2012 05:05 PM

Stunning! Beautiful quilt!

AnnaF 04-18-2012 05:30 PM

Wow!!!! and wow some more..that is dramatically drop dead gorgeous..what a palette for an longarm quilter. I'd love to get my hands on it to quilt..What a great job you did on it. Don't underrate your ability to quilt it, take your time, maybe pick up a stencil or make your own, plan it out carefully and I bet you can make it shine. Way to go!!!!

wildyard 04-18-2012 06:42 PM

I just read all 5 pages hoping someone had asked the name of your pattern. Your quilt is absolutely wonderful and I'd love to try one similar but not in black and white. Would you mind sharing the name of the pattern if you didn't create it yourself? And if you did, it's lovely and I'd love to know what you call it.

goodwitch 04-18-2012 08:02 PM

I was also wondering the name of the pattern as well. I love the simple color scheme and fabric selections. I FMQ and I sometimes have a hard time deciding on just the right quilt design. I think a small flowering vine similar to the design on your fabric would be great in the larger blocks and stitching around the block design in the star blocks would look great.

sewnsewer2 04-18-2012 08:04 PM

Oh Kitsie, this is simply GORGEOUS!!!

chrisvdh 04-19-2012 02:40 AM

I am a very old fashioned hand quilter...I would trace the flowers in the big blocks and outline stitch the other pieces.

Rina 04-19-2012 03:15 AM

You have a stunning quilt.

Perhaps a viney look with a couple of leaves? (Oh, it is spring!! The first 2 pairs of swallows just arrived!
If I were brave and could FMQ (have not the least desire to!), I'd do a larger flower in the SBs the same shape as the fabric print but this is a king size and I've done them before, but not when I have to turn it and turn it!.

I cannot afford to have it LAd and the giftee's want me to do it. Nice compliment but....!

Love it, great job!

I love black and white quilts. I think the vine look would be beautiful on the big block and stitch in the ditch on the other

anniesews 04-19-2012 03:50 AM

I would love to be the one to receive this beauty of a quilt. It will be lovely however you finish it.

Raine 04-19-2012 05:00 AM

Kitsie, I also like your leafy design, it simple and it allows the material to speak verses the quilting.

ljptexas 04-19-2012 05:13 AM

Wow!!! Love, love it!! Beautiful.

MarthaT 04-19-2012 05:19 AM

Do you hand quilt? Maybe you could stitch in the ditch around the pieced blocks with your machine and then do some special hand quilted motif in the larger snowball blocks.

No clue on quilting but I love your quilt!!

sewbizgirl 04-19-2012 05:35 AM

It's a lovely top! I would be tempted to quilt it with red thread...

Your piecing is so beautiful and perfect!

jmabby 04-19-2012 05:35 AM

Beautiful quilt. I want to start a black and white quilt also, you did such a beautiful job. Please show us it once it is quilted.

Karissa 04-19-2012 05:45 AM

Beautiful !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry what was the name of this pattern?
Again beautiful job wish I was this creative & this good of a quilt maker. You should be VERY PROUD

quilter68 04-19-2012 06:42 AM

Kitsie,
Your quilt is STRIKENLY BEAUTIFUL!

After reading several of the reply posts, I like your vine and Why not hand stitch the vine and machine stitch what you can.

Will wait for the big finnish

KathyE 04-19-2012 07:10 AM

Gorgeous quilt! Love the colors. Can't wait to see how you decide to finish it.

I'm not really great at FMQ nor do I LA, so I am in your club. I like less quilting as I like a soft quilt. I was wondering if you could add to the flowers in the snowball blocks by giving the petals and the centers some details like rays coming out of the center and ribbing into the petals. that is close to straight line, and would depict the flowers already there. Are you going to maintain the black and white, or have you entertained colored thread done like I mentioned in the flowers. Yellow centers, blue or pink or red petal accents. Just as idea.
You'll make it beautiful however you do it.

Kitsie 04-19-2012 10:38 AM

Thanks BarbaraSue and all who have made suggestions for me! All your ideas are great, but the thread will be plain black as the kids want it that way (and I agree). I'm going to go with the vine idea modified a little and I can do it (hopefully) as a continuous line. My DD and I will layer it this weekend (I bribed her big time!) Then I'll probably "ponder" for a day or two before I start! Will keep all of you great friends posted! Thank you all!

What a beautiful quilt and your viney idea is just right IMHO what are you using for the back? solid black or white?

you do very nice piecework. maybe you can exchange piecework for LA services with someone here on the board. try putting an ad in the 'swaps' section.

i know they want you to do it yourself, but be honest. not everything people want is best. if you feel you need more practice before you try your hand at a large gift quilt, then follow your own instincts. quilt a large one for yourself first and see how that measures up to your expectations before gifting one that size. i would be terrified to quilt a large quilt for someone else without having done one for myself first as a 'learner'. you would feel terrible if it didn't turn out the way you envisioned it.

Backing - for those who asked this is the backing. Lucky to get 108" wide! It is a true black with while design which will also work with the viney quilting!

Thanks for the ideas, Butterflywing, but wrongo!! I am being honest!! I have done 2 kings and 5 queens before. I do not doubt my abilities, just was searching for design ideas!

Can't help with the quilting but the quilt is goregous. Love it.

jeanharville 04-19-2012 01:15 PM

I just want to add my admiration to the others. You did a fantastic job with the color choice and the piecing. I like the lighter touch on the quilting too and I think your vine idea really works with the fabric and will enhance the quilt design. Thanks for sharing and am looking forward to seeing it quilted.

then you are good to go!! have you thought about quilting from the back and following SOME of the stem lines or using the same design as the motif on the front? it's a beautiful pattern.

Kitsie 04-19-2012 02:16 PM

With a domestic machine on a king-size quilt? No, and too small (busy) for the front.

Both of your suggestions would require FMQ and I do not and probably will not ever want to do it! I can do my vine design continuously, though.

Kitsie, I am partial to black and white myself. (I just finished a black & white and posted it here:

I love your design and your fabric choices. All in all it is a gorgeous quilt. Be sure to post after you are finished. Thanks for sharing.

Kitsie 04-19-2012 04:57 PM

I did see that Alma and was very impressed with it! When the kids said they wanted "my" pattern in Black & white I thought it would not be very nice - but Wow, I was so wrong! B&W is very elegant. Your quilting is beautiful!

golfer 04-19-2012 05:38 PM

I really am impressed with your borders. The rest of the quilt is lovely.

Kitsie 04-19-2012 06:11 PM

Me too, I thought they were going to be a real challenge, but they were actually very easy!! The way I tackled it, half "face" one way and the other half the reverse direction so they meet in the middle of the side. But they are very eye-catching aren't they? (Not a brag - I didn't design the pattern, but the borders caught my eye, too.)
