Being the newbie that I am, I am planning on my next quilt/embroidery blocks. How about the block embroidered in black thread, the border in white and black pattern, and another block of black material embroidered in white. Basically all done in black and white. Has anyone done a quilt in only black and white?

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 03-25-2011 04:22 AM

There are many two color quilts. Black and white would work.

whinnytoo 03-25-2011 04:26 AM

black and white quilts are stunning!

Sounds like a new form of "red work". I'm not a big fan of red but I think I would like your colors.

tarbender30 03-25-2011 04:34 AM

Yes, I just done an just Black & White Quilt.
I will try to find it and get a picture to you.
It was a lot of fun too.
I just decided to go with a plain black backing, which is not put on yet. lol

I just finished this yesterday and I need help.
#1-Shouild I have another color within this top? Maybe in the border?
#2-Do you see a couple of blocks that "stand" out and should I take out & fix or leave alone?
I LOVE what everyone has to say, that's why I like this board so much and I really need help with this one.
Advice or Opinions, PLEASE.
Thanxs,
Bev

I did a quilt with black & white scrappy prints surrounding the embroidery. I did the embroideries in red but it would work in black.

tarbender30 03-25-2011 11:19 AM

I will keep trying to get it to you. lol

I love your idea of the black and white 'redwork'! I also love seeing the black and white quilts the other gals showed. I have so many projects in my head already that I am not sure I will be adding a b&w one soon but, I will look forward to seeing yours soon!

There are plenty of examples of black and white quilts out there as it is a very popular theme. You can see a few at the link below:

I have done a lot of black and white quilts. One thing I try to do in most of them is have a "small" pop of one other color - like yellow or red or pink or lime green. And right now I'm designing (in my head) a black, white and silver embroidered anniversary quilt in crepe backed satin. Do it! You'll be amazed at how stunning it is. And be sure to post a pic when you are done.

Well, I did one. It's my avatar. Some of the quilting is black thread on white.

Dianne1 03-26-2011 08:06 AM

Black and white, blue and white they are all beautiful. Can;t wait to see it.

quilttiludrop 03-26-2011 08:53 AM

Black and white quilts are extremely attractive. There's one in the November 2008 edition of Quilters Newsletter that is bow ties in a grid on point with a checkerboard background and wide border with applique bits and bowtie blocks at corners and centers. The challenge was to make the quilt 85% neutral with 15% color. There is a narrow red sashing in the center portion, and some of the color bits in the border are also red. There's a lot you can do with just black and white!

gramarraine 03-26-2011 09:00 AM

I did one a year ago for my grand daughter. She wanted all black and white. I made the Just Can't Cut It by all Washed Up patterns. The quilt was really pretty but an other color with the black and whites would have been nice.

meanmom 03-26-2011 09:42 AM

I did a quilt in nothing but black and white and it is gorgeous. I actually decorated my guest bedroom in nothing but black and white and now my kids want their rooms redone that way. I wanted to do a bedroom that way for years and everyone loves it. the quilt is the highlight of the room.

The black and whites are beautiful. Loved your quilts.
Awesome work!

Bonnie 03-26-2011 02:23 PM

Looks good, but I like the black and white. I did one last summer that is just black and white and I love it.

Marysewfun 03-26-2011 04:24 PM

I think the black and white quilts are so stunning!

A quick giggle about the use of terms like "Redwork", "blackwork" - - I have yet to ever have my embroidery machine tell me it can't sew it because I don't have the correct "color" in it!! - (I know, back to sleep!)

Saw a quilt in a quilt shop which I thought was black and cream, that was pieced and embroidered. So beautiful. The quilt turned out to be a very dark navy. Still looked like black to me. LOL. Any how, I had to have the patterns. I wish I had a picture for you. Your choices will look beautiful.
