black and white

do you use black or white thread when sewing black and white blocks together ??

Judith1005 04-02-2017 10:23 AM

I use an antique white or a really light beige. But, you should do what you are comfortable with. I would probably quilt it with white.

When I'm sewing a dark to a light color I will use a grey thread.

popover 04-02-2017 10:44 AM

Whichever comes to hand......

Same here.

If grey was handy I'd use that. Otherwise when piecing, it really makes no difference to me.

Me too, or a light beige!

ArtsyOne 04-02-2017 02:54 PM

I use a neutral gray. When the fabric is both black and white like my avatar I use whatever's in my machine.

grannie cheechee 04-02-2017 03:27 PM

When piecing I use grey at all times. I figure you don't see the seams anyway LOL

MadQuilter 04-02-2017 03:36 PM

I go with gray.

sewingsuz 04-02-2017 06:08 PM

I also have been using grey a lot lately.

bearisgray 04-02-2017 06:17 PM

Gray or thAt smoky green.

Jane Quilter 04-02-2017 06:27 PM

I use gray alot. and I always use a neutral to piece. If in doubt, I stitch a sample piece, turn to the right side and pull/spread/stretch the seam open to see what you see. If it jumps out at you (think piecing with red), I would change it to a neutral less noticeable. (not that red is a neutral, I was just making an illustration)

joe'smom 04-02-2017 08:15 PM

I've started using up my older thread when piecing, regardless of the color of thread and fabric. If sewing black and white together, I think a medium neutral would be best.

JanieH 04-03-2017 05:10 AM

Neutral gray is my go-to color for this.

tessagin 04-03-2017 05:38 AM

I have a lot of grey thread for this reason. If hand quilting like big stitch I use matching thread.

When I am sewing 2 high contrast fabrics together, I try to plan to sew them all the same way (light on top). Doesn't matter on top thread (usually use a neutral) but I use the dark color in the bobbin. This is because I press the seam to the dark side and if a high contrast thread, there is a slight possibility of it showing thru. With a good quality fabric, this probably isn't a problem, but it is a habit I formed years and years ago and it works for me.

csknott 04-03-2017 06:10 AM

I use gray or a nutral for all my piecing regardless.

MissSongbird 04-03-2017 06:35 AM

I tend to use white for most of my piecing anyway, so I would say white.

trolleystation 04-03-2017 07:35 AM

After pressing, if you see the seams, you might want to shorten you stitch a bit.

crafty pat 04-03-2017 10:36 AM

I use a light gray.

sJens 04-03-2017 01:35 PM

I use gray when doing white and black blocks.

linmid 04-04-2017 12:46 PM

I us off white, light tan, and grey for all of my piecing (ms?).
