Hi all, I'm hoping someone can provide some advice for me.

I'm making a new quilt for a little girl who's family just lost everything they owned in a fire. The little girls Aunt told me she lost her "silky", which was her blanket. I've made the quilt, now ready for the binding and I'm trying to put regular blanket binding on it.

I'm just a little confused as to what's the right way to do this. It's 4", pre-folded, so it seems like it would be easy to just sew it on instead of using the normal binding method for quilts. It does have a finished edge, so should I just sew it using a decorative stitch or should I try doing it the normal way, just sewing it to the blanket about 1.75" from the quilt edge?

Any help is appreciated.

If that child called it her "silky", it's because the blanket binding was soft and floppy and silky. That is how it should be on this quilt you are making for her. I hope it can be the same color "binding" as the old one!! There are no rules in quilting...or at least there shouldn't be!! Post a photo when finished, please.

I belive most blanket bindings are by Wright and they have info on their webside on how to do it.

I would think that would work. When I do blanket binding on a quilt, I put a wide border on the outside edge, then put a regular binding on. Then I put the blanket binding on over that. Then if the blanket binding wears out, there is still a binding on the quilt. I'm just a bit AR I guess.

What is AR?

I usually just use a large zigzag stitch to put satin binding on. You might want to hand baste first to make sure you can catch both sides.

That's a great idea, and one I'll try to remember.

Thanks everyone. I was doing some more research last night, I think I"m just going to pin it around the edge, then do a decorative stitch on the binding edge. I'll post a pic when it's done.
