I have 28 Fq's (Hand dies) that I washed with a very nice 1 meter of Robert Kaufman red reindeer fabric, The hand dies bled all over my reindeers so now it is pepto pink. :( I even used a fermeldahide to wash with it.
How do I stop fabrics from bleeding? and how do I get the pepto pink colour out of my reindeer fabric? Any one else have bad experiences or advice? Thanks! |
just have to pre-wash with color catchers and use a dye setter. something like synthope or retain. as for getting the pink out you might just have to soak in something like vinegar.

What is a color catcher? I thought vinegar sets fabric not gets stains out. :( |
Vinegar will set the dye, don't know what will take the pink out.
Color catchers are in the laundry isle made by shout. Looks like a fabric softener sheet and collects the dye in the wash water. |
Ouch, I am so sorry this happened to you. I don't really know how to take the pink out, but don't dry it, because I know heat will set the color.
I think that even with using Retayne or any such product, you still need to separate like colors, especially those that would bleed, like batiks. |
Color catchers are a Shout product, I think. They look like a dryer sheet, but you put them in the wash and they absorb any dyes that get out in the water. If it bled that much, I'm not sure they would have trapped it all. I keep them on hand when for washing quilts when they are done.

I don't pre-wash, but I sort laundry into like colors and use Color Catchers with reds, purples, pinks, etc.

sorry about this.rit dye has a color that worked for me.

sorry about this.rit dye has a color remover that has worked for me.good luck!!

Did you hand dye this yourself? I would make a quick contact with the people at Dharma Trading. They specialize in this sort of thing. http://www.dharmatrading.com/index.html
Many dyes are picky and depending on how the fabric was processed before it was dyed will be a factor. I would definitely not do anything with heat until then. This is the precise reason I prewash everything separately and check the water. If I suspect I have a bleeder I will do it again and recheck the water. It may take a little more effort but it saves on the frustration of seeing a lot of word ruined later. |

I have already dryed it all :( I did not dye these myself, I bought them at a quilting shop here.

Do Batiks bleed?
|
None of the batiks I have did...
|
I have heard they bleed but mine haven't.
|
Many fabrics bleed no matter where you get them. Of the batik genre, hand dyed seem to be the worst (at least in my opinion). Commercially produced batiks are less likely.
You might be out of luck on this one but never give up hope. I'd still check out the places who specialize in dye processes. You will be surprised at what you will learn. |
I have some batiks that bleed like they were in a slasher movie and some that have not bled. it just depends on the maker and the dyes that they used. But red is notorious for bleeding. I would try those bleach pens maybe that will help get the pink out of the fabric since you already dried it.

Try using BIZ bleach powder on the raindeer fabric. Dissolve 1 cup Biz in aprox 2 gal. hot water and add the fabric. Put a plastic colander in the container over the fabric to keep it submerged in the water. Let it stay that way for 24 hours, then dump the whole container into your washer and wash as is on regular cycle alone.
I hope this helps. Faith  :XD: |
not all batiks are created equal...and many do bleed! it just depends. and there are certain colors that tend to almost always bleed...like reds/ purples...
synthropol in the wash will keep dyes from getting on other fabrics; vinegar really only sets (acid dyes) hand dyes should always be washed separately from anything else...they often run...sometimes bad....i think sometimes people who are doing hand dying are not taking the extra steps of washing the fabrics with synthropol and heat setting them. i dye fabrics myself often and do not have a problem with bleeding when i use them...they get washed 3 or 4 times before i consider them 'done' and if i have one that wants to keep running i separate it to make sure it is not used in anything that will be washed...learned my lesson when i dyed my teenage son's gray socks bubble gum pink...he was not amused ( and i wasn't happy about having to go buy new socks) when ever you purchase hand dyes...run water through them or put them in a bowl of hot water and swish them around to see if you have a problem fabric...if you do make sure to not put it in with anything that would not (match) use sythropol to keep the color from going anywhere except down the drain and keep washing them until there is no more color in the water. |
I always wash my batiks before I use them, and I havent had any bleed yet. But I have read on here where some peoples have, so I prewash to b safe.

I bought the Oxi clean, I did not work to take the pink out. :( I wen't to walmart looking for colour catchers and apparently they dony sell them or even know what they are. Are they only avalible to the US?
|
Aully - I'm in a similar situation to you at the moment.
In the southern hemisphere they do not sell colour catchers. Seems to be marketed in the US. I've exhausted the same options you have. Currently trying natural unsweetened yoghurt. Yes - I am that desperate. |
What can I use instead of colour catchers?, no where here sells them.
|
Contact Dharma Trading. They will have something that will work.
http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/eng/2935174-AA.shtml I recommend you call and talk to someone. They can guide you to the correct products. |
