Bleeding
 

I bought a BUNCH of flannels at JoAnn's sale yesterday. I've already washed most of it and they are all bleeding! Some of them have already gone through three or more washes and rinses!
Does anyone know if JoAnn's takes them back if they can't be used?

Any hope/suggestions (for the fabric, not JoAnn's)?

I would most certainly take them back. I believe they require that the fabric has not been cut and if you have your receipt you should get your money back. Curious was this the Snuggle flannel or Quilters Quality flannel?

How awful to buy something you can't use. I would sure take it back. I know Hancocks takes it back. They stick a little tag on it you keep and use if you need to return it. Good luck.

I just don't trust non LQS fabrics.... especially flannels. So many places put cheaper inferior items for sale for those 'super sales'. The stores make more profit than their regular stuff but you get way less quality. Sorry you had this experience..... yes, try to take it back.

The Quilters flannel did not bleed. The Snuggle did.

Doesn't look faded or pilled but it is sure bleeding!

My local LQS only has pastel patterned in baby stuff flannel. I want vibrant colors; solid and patterned but not in baby style.

You can try to take it back - make sure you have the receipt with you.

I consider fabric 'defective' if it keeps releasing color.

On the positive side - aren't you relieved that you found out that this fabric has issues BEFORE you cut and sewed it?

Yes, I ALWAYS wash first thing.

Have you tried Retayne? Put the fabric in a big pot or canner with very hot water (140 degrees) on the stove and add Retayne. I did that with some flannel that bled. Then washed it with very faint color coming out on the color catcher. You can get it online or at some quilt shops. I haven't seen it at Joanne's, but a friend saw some at a Joanne's somewhere.

I still think purchased fabric should NOT require any further treatment to prevent or stop bleeding. (other than perhaps one or two washes in ordinary detergent - at the most!)

It makes as much sense to me as buying a new car that needs to be painted after it's been purchased

Retayne helps keep in the colors. i doubt JoAnn's will take back cut fabric but you could try.

I'm so glad ladies on this board told me about Retayne and color catchers. I just used the Retayne on some batik backing fabric. I used the color catchers as a test to see when I could quit rewashing. Took 3 times.

Well, today I have three (so far) that are pilling.
I'm going back to JoAnn's to raise a stink! No phone call first.
And some are STILL bleeding! I have the color catchers to prove that.

Did you use color catchers? I always use them anymore. And on new fabric I put 3 color catchers in a "for intimates mesh bag" and they do a great job on bleeding. They are wonderful - they catch the reds and purples really well.
