I've got that information somewhere on the computer, but only found for 12" blocks. I'll look some more and post when I find it. I don't remember what site I got it off of, but it was off the net.

It might help if I gave you the info-huh. If you don't understand how it copied, email me and I'll redo it so you can understand it.

Quilts without a border

If you aren't using a border, the following will be helpful in figuring how many 4" squares you need. These sizes are for comforter size quilts, not bedspread size.
Crib size (42" x 50") = 168 squares (12 across by 14 down)
Twin/single size (69" x 90") = 520 squares (20 across by 26 down)
Full/double size (84" x 90") = 624 squares (24 across by 26 down)
Queen size (90" x 96") = 728 squares (26 across by 28 down)
King size (104" x 96") = 840 squares (30 across by 28 down)

4" BLOCKS
We are providing quilters with these handy charts of some of the more popular block sizes in hopes that it will provide quidance and the information necessary to purchase or make the correct number of blocks. There are so many beautiful block kits available on Ebay today but many quilters are uncertain of how many blocks they will need to purchase in order to make their quilt.
The number of blocks in our chart below are based on the mattress size only.
Add extra blocks or borders for drop at sides of mattress. Happy Quilting!

CRIB size = 24" x 48"

The chart is meant to be an estimate only and to serve as a guideline. Fabric widths do vary. For the purpose of this guide, I calculated the fabric as one yard in length and 40" in bolt width. Remember errors in rotary cutting will reduce the number of fabric squares you will get from one yard of fabric.

Here then is the chart of approx. how many fabric squares you can cut from one yard of fabric which is 40" in width:

Cut size of fabric square - 2 1/2" - number of squares per yard - 224

Cut size of fabric square - 3 1/2" - number of squares per yard - 110

Cut size of fabric square - 4 1/2" - number of squares per yard - 64

Cut size of fabric square - 5 1/2" - number of squares per yard - 42

Cut size of fabric square - 6 1/2" - number of squares per yard - 30

Cut size of fabric square - 7 1/2" - number of squares per yard - 20

Cut size of fabric square - 8 1/2" - number of squares per yard - 16

Cut size of fabric square - 9 1/2" - number of squares per yard - 12

Cut size of fabric square - 10 1/2" - number of squares per yard - 9

Remember, these are only approx. numbers based on one yard of fabric sized 36" x 40" and assuming no waste in rotary cutting. As any quilter knows, rotary cutting fabric is not a perfect art form - different fabrics will stretch after being pre-shrunk and cutting perfect lines can be quite difficult. Real life cutting results may not yield exactly the same numbers as in the chart every time.

   Oh happy day. You gals are wonderful. I have never seen such a complete breakdown for block requirements anywhere; not even in all the wonderful quilting books, magazines etc. out there. Believe me, I think all your work will be very very appreciated by all we "still learning" folks out there.

Are the numbers correct for the Full and Queen size quilts? I was wondering because they are the same for the 10 inch blocks.

No way are those good for quilt sizes, none of them. They have virtually no drop whatsoever, let alone any tuck in if you want a quilt instead of a bedcover.
Mattress sizes are:
crib 28x52
twin 39x75
full 54x75
queen 60x80
king 76x80
cal king 72x84

Mattress size

Are these measurements for the top of the mattress only . What if you want the quilt to be 15" over each side? I'm new to this so I want to make as few mistakes as possible.

Maggiem 05-02-2013 08:16 PM

In my humble opinion, calculating the number of blocks you need is easy. 1. You need to know how big you want your quilt to be (your mattress size plus the drop on all sides). 2. Then you need to know your finished block size. 3. Then divide the width of the desired quilt by the block size and divide the length of the desired quilt by the block size. 4. Multiply the answers you got in 3.

Example: I want to make a crib quilt that is 48 inches by 56 inches. My blocks are 8 inches square, finished size. 48/8=6. 56/8=7. 6x7=42. So I need to make 42 blocks, if there are no borders.

Example 2: I want to make the same quilt, but with 4 inch borders on all sides. So the actual blocks sewn together will be 40 inches by 48 inches. 40/8=5, 48/8=6 and finally 5x6=30. I would need to make 30 blocks, and sew 6 rows of 5.

You don't need to buy books or information sheets. You just need to know what dimensions you want your quilt to be, and what the FINISHED size of your block is.

bearisgray 05-02-2013 08:21 PM

Maggiem - good and complete answer!

Basic math/arithmetic does have its uses!

mom-6 05-03-2013 06:28 AM

Thanks for all the good info! I usually just put the semi-finished top on the bed and see how it looks. Then add more rows or borders if needed. Lol! My method is not very helpful to anyone else.

That's my usual method, too.

I do start out with a guesstimate, though.

Example:

Queen size mattress top: 60 x 80
Drop on both sides and bottom: (60 + 15 + 15 ) and (80 + 15) - which ends up being about 90 x 95
Then I start deciding how to 'make it work'

I usually prefer having the set be odd x odd or even x even. Especially if using alternate blocks. Sometimes it doesn't matter.

medartb 10-14-2014 09:37 AM

This info was exactly what I needed. Thanks so much!

I am sewing about six month. Would like to make large block queen size quilt. I have been reading about the nine square rearranged. .can I use nine ten inch blocks ,( when cut would be 5 inch) would that formular fit o.k I want to use suttle change in color( batisk what amout of each color would be good.thanks lori

I don't understand the way you have this done. I am making a quilt for our king size bed and the squares are 15 X 15, so do I need 35 blocks, or what?

To be able to answer your question - a little more information would be helpful.

1) What are the dimensions of the top of your mattress? "king" sizes seem to vary

2) How much do you want it to hang down on each side and the bottom (drop)? Mattresses come in various thicknesses.

3) Do you want to tuck it over your pillows or do you put the pillows on top?

This site might help you a bit - -
