Blue and Yellow 2.5 in strips

I had dinner with my great niece tonight and her fiance. She is getting married in April and I asked her if she would like me to make her a quilt or would she prefer me purchase off her registry. She emphatically told me she absolutely wanted a quilt. I made her sister one when she got married last year. I asked her what would be her choice of colors. She said yellow and blue.

I just now saw the Notting Hill quilt pattern that was posted on 9-18 board. I love the pattern. I decided that would be her quilt if I can find enough different fabrics. She is 6 ft tall and her husband to be is probably 6'3" tall. I will probably have to make it longer so they will be covered. I think it would be very pretty to use to use different fabrics across the quilt. One row blue and one row yellow and then white or cream as the background. If any of you have leftover blue or yellow 3" strips from a quilt or scraps that could be cut into 13" long X 3" strips that you would be willing to give up, I would love to take them off your hands. I think the quilt would be pretty to have all different fabrics for the quilt. That would mean I would need about 125 different fabrics with the added length. I think large prints, small prints, solids, stripes or any fabric that would be considered predominantly yellow or blue would work. I will be glad to pay for a reasonable price for the strips or scraps and whatever postage would be. I have a large scrap bin but not a whole lot of blues and only a few yellow scraps. I guess I just don't sew much with blues and yellows. I did make one quilt in these colors so I have some scraps left over from that quilt. I can cut a strip off my yellow fabrics or fat quarters, but I don't think I could come up with enough different fabrics. Please send me a private message if you have anything you would like to sell or donate. As long as the scraps are at least 13" and 3" wide, it would be usable. I think the concept would be really pretty. If it were just one strip or scrap, it could be mailed in a regular envelope. So just let me know how much $ you want if you have any that you can bear to give up. I will also ask your opinion on my thought process. I could just do it in 5-6 different fabrics for each color, but I like the thoughts of using all different fabrics. Do you all think it would work and look alright?

Is this the pattern you mean? http://freespiritfabric.com/core-pag...php?gal_id=500 My only question is how well the yellow row will contrast with the cream. It could be lovely, but then again the yellow could get lost.

I think blue and yellow are pretty together in a quilt. My mother made my son and daughter in law a beautiful quilt when they got married. My daughter in law wanted it in blue and yellow. I think with some cream too, but can't remember now. It is so pretty on their bed, and she has her bedroom looking like out of a magazine with all the things she has found to add. She has so many pretty porcelain figurines in blue and white and other items as she would come across them at shops etc. I wish I had a picture.

I think that it would be very pretty in blues and yellows. I will have to look in my stash to see what I can come up with for you. no $ needed. just a fellow board member wanting to help.

I would be happy to send you some strips. I don't need anything in return, but if you would pay the postage, that would be great. PM your address to me and I'll get them in the mail when I go to town next.

Love the Notting Hill. Printed the pattern and not sure what colors!

Couldn't get the pattern to down load so missed it. Will check and see if I have any strips that size.

Moda has a set of fabrics called "Summer Breeze" that is pretty yellows and blues. I think they even came up with a Summer Breeze 2 line. It might give you the variety you need.

I recently made 2 blue, yellow and white quilts. The second quilt was made with the leftovers from the first. Both were made as raffle quilts. Have you thought of using white instead of cream? I can send you some leftovers from the leftovers. PM me your address.

I, too, would like to make this pattern. When I saw it, I liked it. Sure, it would be pretty.

sparkys_mom 09-22-2013 03:11 AM

That's a beautiful pattern and I love the idea of blue and yellow. I don't actually have much of either color but would suggest you try looking on etsy for fat eighth bundles. A lot of the vendors there will create custom bundles for you and that could give you a good head start. Good luck. Will love to see the finished product. The Summer Breeze that was mentioned is a beautiful fabric line.

Where are you in Florida? PM me and I will gladly send you some blue and yellow that I have. Don't need to
pay postage. Maybe the quilt should just be yellows and blues, no cream or white?

psquared52 09-22-2013 03:52 AM

I've made several blue/yellow quilts. They turn out beautifully. I think white might work better than cream...I think it would have better contrast with the yellow specifically. I do love the idea of using as wide a selection of blue/yellow as you can gather. It will be a beautiful quilt! I have also prefer to ask if people want a quilt or something off their registry. Don't want to go to trouble/work/expense of a beautiful quilt if they won't appreciate it. If you'll PM your address, I'll check my fabrics and see what I can add.

BeckyBryan 09-22-2013 04:28 AM

PM me your address. I have lots of blues and yellows!

karenpatrick 09-22-2013 04:35 AM

Blue and yellow is my favorite color combination. Moda has a couple of lines in blue and yellow. One is called Summer Breeze and the other is Summer Breeze II. I have made quilts out of both of them.

If that is the pattern it looks like it would not be to hard. We are flying my sister back here to her family home to spend her last days with all of her siblings and other family members. She has requested to do a black/ red/ white or a quilt in the orange tone family.
I hate to ask but if anyone has any strips extra in either of these to color schemes it might be something that she could sew some of the strips with my sisters and I there to help her. She is a quilter and has cancer now about everywhere . They told her last week that she has maybe 2 weeks left . So her last requests is to get back to West Plains and to have us help her leave a quilt for her 2 girls and 2 granddaughters.
We us usually try to get together every year or two to have a sisters quilting vacation. This would of been her year, she was to show everyone how to appliqué . Needless to say that won't happen it is in her brain and she can not remember a lot. And can only quilt if someone is sitting with her to tell her how to do it.
if anyone has any of the colors that would work with this pattern and you don't mind sharing . Could you help with the strips. I would help with shipping and would not mind to send you a strip of something I have.
but if you can not that is ok. If I could ask for a prayer to be said for her to pass with little to no pain. She has been in a lot. Sorry to tag along with this but I guess I just needed to say a little about my sister Sherry. She has always been a quilter that always gives her quilts away to someone else that needed it or liked it . She or we never thought this would happen to us. I am expecting a new granddaughter my first and I also pray that it does not happen at the same time. One of my sisters ask me last night what would I do if it was at the same time. My answer was I don't know and I don't want to choose. How would you handle it? Sorry.
i have some blue and yellow that I could send if you email me the address.
Connie

Should have read this before I posted.

cstucke_1, so sorry to hear about your sister, but what a wonderful thing to get to spend the last days with her. She may not be able to sew by the time she gets here, but she will be stitching up a storm in heaven.
I lost my sister to cancer two years ago. She was about 1400 miles from where I live. I did get to see her while she wasn't too bad, but did not get to be with her when she passed. Prayers to you and your family. As far as the grandbaby, it is a way to let you now that with each life that ends a new one begins. I am sure your sister would want to rejoice at the birtth of your granddaughter and she would probably tell you not to be sad at her passing just be glad she is in the arms of Jesus..

Would one of Keepsake Quilting's medleys help? They have this yellow and blue collection of strips (but they are precut to 2.5 inches, and your finished size is 2.5, right?). I think I can help with some yellow and blue. Sending PM.

I made a quilt using a Summer Breeze layer cake. it turned out beautiful. I used a Jenny Doan pattern--think it was called Double Slice. You can find it on U tube.

Andrea 09-22-2013 08:44 AM

Challenging project! Good for you. However, as noted in another reply, I would be careful about placing the yellows next to the cream. You'd need a very bright yellow to provide enough contrast. I have been guilty several times of being disappointed in the quilt because of lack of contrast in my colors. Everything just blends together until it's difficult to see the pattern. I'd try some sample blocks before plunging ahead on the quilt. Good luck! Very nice of you to make her a quilt.

swizzy 09-22-2013 10:00 AM

I will be happy to send some blues if you send your address Sorry, I have no yellows.

coopah 09-22-2013 12:16 PM

My favorite quilt is blue and yellow with white. That white just pops everything, but if you want to blend the colors, then cream would be a good choice. I used the white as the blue and yellow prints had that in the background. That's a happy combination of colors!

BETTY62 09-22-2013 12:28 PM

Do you want only LQS fabric?

DonnaPBradshaw 09-22-2013 06:33 PM

I've downloaded the quilt and I'm wondering, what if you used black as the background? Would the strips stand out more and then the yellow wouldn't get lost or any other light color you choose? Just an idea.

Charming 09-22-2013 06:40 PM

Pm me your address. If I dig in my stash I am sure I can find your colors.

KathyPhillips 09-22-2013 09:30 PM

Wonderful bunch of quilters come together to help a fellow quilter!! I love the blue and yellow idea with white. Bright yellow with white or white on white would work well. I, too, will send you some strips. I have been saving blues and yellows for a quilt of my own (which I don't have because I give my quilts away!). PM your address. You want 2.5 inch or 3 inch strips? If we send strips, you can just start sewing when you get them in the mail!

DOTTYMO 09-22-2013 10:21 PM

I have just been reading a blog where it states someone to make a lovely coloured quilt has purchased the scraps from somewhere on the Internet. Can't find out where a google search may help. Thought if you are running short this may help instead of buying large fabric pieces.
