So, I was making an apron and my machine started making a clunking/thunking noise.
I did a quick search here and tried to troubleshoot the issue. The only thing I can think of is it is bobbin case. My machine is not a super great one... a Brother 2600i, or something to that nature. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Just trying to figure this out. Thanks in advance. |
I have a Brother and when to much lint builds up in the bobbin case and under the feed dogs it will start making a clunking noise. Have you gone in and cleaned the bobbin case? You may have some lint build up. I use canned air to clean mine out then do a quick swipe with the brush to get rid of the lint.
Hope this helps. |
I will try it again.... hopefully it will be that easy to fix.
Thanks! |
could be a dull needle as well if you haven't changed it in a while
|
Do clean out, though I'd recommend vacuuming as you brush instead of canned air. A quiet "thunk" or "thwack" might be a dull needle, though.
|
Thanks....
No luck... it makes the sound without the needle in. Also re-cleaned and it still makes the sound. HECK! |
It may be that the timing is off. This can make a thunking noise if out of line.

I only ask, because it was a $120 machine from Walmart about 5 yrs ago. I have only been quilting about a year and was thinking of getting a better machine. Therefore, I do not want to spend a bunch to fix this machine, if I am going to be upgrading soon. Sigh... decisions-decisions. |
I understand your pain-I am going in tomorrow to the local machine store to test drive their machines. I wasn't counting on doing this for at least another 6 months!
|
Some less expensive machines aren't made to be repaired.: (
It's a throw away society. Check with a local repair shop, they may not recommend repairing it. |
I have several brother machines and the latest one has a plastic black case around the bobbin housing, it is the problem with mine. I was very disappointed had to buy a new machine for the same reason, price. I upgraded to a new machine. I do regular maintenance on my machines and keep this area clean.

Brothers are not easily oiled, but I do mine. Use a dime to loosen that big screw. Oil the moving parts there. It helped mine.
|
My friend had. Brother, same problem...it made so much noise that it sounded like it was going to explode! It's now at the dumps!!! Good luck!

I have the same machine and had that happen one time. I cleaned it, completely re threaded it (spool as well as bobbin) and put in a new needle and whatever was the problem was solved.
Make sure you're using the right kind of bobbin??? A plastic one like what came with the machine - metal is not good. |
When this happens I always clean and oil, then change the needle.
|
I'm sorry the cleaning didn't help. Did you clean the moving parts as well as the case? Lint builds up on those to. I ended up cleaning mine yesterday after reading your post and boy did it need it.
This is a neat little tool I use to get into those difficult spots on my machines when I need to oil them. My husband got me one from his job but you can buy them and they make oiling a cinch. Some if you look around do have a longer tip. http://www.amazon.com/PIN-POINT-PREC...7052726&sr=8-3 |
