Bobbin hint

1 Attachment(s)
Someone mentioned in my Layered Bobbin thread that they had trouble keeping track of specialty threads on the bobbins so I thought I would repost this hint. A while back, someone posted about buying the plastic hose, cutting off little circles and cutting one side of the circle open for keeping bobbins tidy. I loved the idea and bought a section. I added another helpful idea to my bobbin keepers.
When I have a different weight or specialty thread I want to keep track of, I write the information on the bobbin keeper with a sharpie and put it on the bobbin. (I stuck the 40 Wt marker on an old cone so it would show up on camera.)

Genius!! I was just thinking last night that I needed to figure out a good way to label bobbins. Perfect timing!

Great idea, thank you!!!!

Tink's Mom 01-22-2014 08:01 AM

I bet this idea would work well with embroidery threads, too. Will have to try it.

I've been using the little ponytail holders, but I like the plastic better because you can see what color the thread is, and writing on them is a bonus. Thanks for posting.

What size tubing is the best to use?

It will depend on your bobbins but my Bernina bobbins tube measures 2 inches around with the tape measure or about 3/4 inch across on my square. Bring your bobbin with you to the hardware store so you can fit the tubing to your bobbin.

The way I keep my bobbins neat is; I use the thingies (technical term) that you use when you are painting your toenails. keeps them in check and you can still see the thread. Also very inexpensive.

Yes, great tip- love that you can mark them!!

ILoveToQuilt 01-23-2014 04:23 AM

After you "tube" your bobbin, you can set it on top of your thread spool and secure it to the spool with a golf-tee. Thread and bobbin stored together.

I have different bobbin cases for different types of thread: cotton, polyester, So Fine, Bottom Line, etc. But your idea works great too.

judylg 01-23-2014 05:30 AM

That is a great idea, I did try the tiny pony tail elastics, but still could not easily see what color was in the bobbins, the tubing is a great idea. Thanks for sharing, no more lose threads!

cindit 01-23-2014 06:07 AM

What do you use to cut the tubing? PS Great idea!!

Make sure you buy a piece long enough so you have a length to hang on to. I use a large serrated knife from my knife set. I think it might be the bread knife? I cut almost through and use an old pair of scissors to finish it and cut the slit. If you have a good pair of garden pruners, they would probably work too and you wouldn't need the extra length to hang onto.

caspharm 01-23-2014 08:44 AM

Great idea!

wraez 01-23-2014 08:45 AM

great tip and I have seen it b4, possibly from you but have not used it yet, I've been using the pony tail things for securing bobbins but like that you can see the color of the bobbin on your suggestion as well as writing info on the tubing

mom2boyz 01-23-2014 10:30 AM

Do you find that cutting with a serrated knife leaves the edges jaggedy- or does it matter? This is the best idea yet as I too have trouble with wt and poly/cotton.

Tartan 01-23-2014 11:01 AM

It has cut pretty smooth but you could trim the edges after cutting with the scissors if needed.

You should send your hint into Fons and Porter and you might win a free subscription. I love this hint.

Great idea. I think this is a real problem for people who use a variety of weights of threads-I'm one of them and I know that I cannot always visually tell the difference when looking at a bobbin. I mentioned on an earlier post that I use little plastic bags that are intended for jewelry findings to store bobbins that have unusual threads on them. But, I like your idea also.

sushi 01-23-2014 11:44 AM

On my way to the hardware store. Thanks, Tartan!!!

JanieH 01-23-2014 12:53 PM

I love your idea - would really keep the threads identified and not wasted because you don't know for sure what they are.

Chis2 01-23-2014 05:26 PM

Thanks for the tip. I hate the constant threads being loose. This idea will really help me.

MarleneC 01-24-2014 08:27 AM

My hubby cut mine and he just used a sharp knife.

Sandrea 01-24-2014 09:43 AM

Thanks Tartan for this tip. I always hated the threads hanging all over the bobbin box and I would sit there and waste time twirling the bobbins to wind them back up, only to later find that they were unruly again. I think a little Gremlin sneaks into the sewing room at night and untwirls the bobbins. tee hee Thanks again for the tip.

maryellen2u 01-24-2014 12:36 PM

COOOL! Thanks!

pw6 01-24-2014 12:37 PM
