Bobbin storage

1 Attachment(s)
I use the clear hose cut into segments for keeping my bobbins neat. The hose segments have extra feature of using a sharpie to mark what kind of thread is in the bobbin. I also like to save the little clear acrylic boxes that come with Rochet(sp) chocolates. I have one for my bobbins and the top goes on if I need to take them to a workshop. I have a whole row of the acrylic boxes on a cookie sheet in my sewing room. I store all the little things like safety pins, straight pins, machine feet etc. so they are close at hand.

Sometimes I'll buy a product because I want the container.

ManiacQuilter2 03-04-2016 10:07 AM

Neat Idea Tartan!

rryder 03-04-2016 11:56 AM

Great idea Tartan! What size hose are you buying? I had been looking at those bobbin saver rings, but your system looks like it would work better for me.

Onebyone--I've done the same thing.

Mine measures 2-1/4 inches around with the tape measure. It is about 1/8 inch thick plastic and if I use a ruler to measure across the open end of the tube its 6/8 th. I bought mine at Canadian Tire but most hardware stores should have it maybe in the plumbing department?

redstilettos 03-04-2016 01:19 PM

Clever....and I bet it keeps the thing from unwinding and making a mess of your drawers, too!

cashs_mom 03-04-2016 01:38 PM

I"m so un-innovative. lol. I use a little box (wood for the 301 and acrylic for the Bernina) with those little hair holders (whatever they're called lol) around the bobbins to keep the thread from unwinding.

tessagin 03-04-2016 02:08 PM

I have bobbin box specific for each machine. 401 and 2662. I just wet the end of the thread and press it

Cactus Stitchin 03-04-2016 02:34 PM

This is exactly what I'm using also. I did find it a bit of a pain trying to cut them evenly so my husband purchased the 'cutters' deaigned for them and now it's simple to do. I think we invested $10-15 for them but it was well worth it!

ctyankee 03-04-2016 02:46 PM

I use those bobbin saver rings, which I love. They come in 3 different colors; I have 4. Each one is dedicated to one machine. The great thing is, the bobbins don't fall out -- ever!

I think Tartan's system would be a good alternative.

And, I must confess, I buy items for the containers, too. Shhh, don't tell hubby!

I've been known to do that too!

QuiltnNan 03-04-2016 02:55 PM

great tip, thanks

EasyPeezy 03-04-2016 02:55 PM

The hose I bought is marked 1/2" ID x 3/4" OD (which I think translates to
1/2" Internal Diameter x 3/4" Outside Diameter). Hope this helps.

Can you post a picture of your cutter? I sure could use one.

Quilting Grandma 03-04-2016 05:41 PM

Since I learned of this, my bobbins are so much better behaved. My husband cuts them for me. Now if a bobbin escapes and rolls away, the thread stays in place.

QuiltnLady1 03-04-2016 08:05 PM

Great ideas -- thanks.

Over here, you can buy that size by the yard in aquarium stores. Chances are it'd be cheaper from a hardware store tho lol.......

lmnopquilter 03-05-2016 02:12 AM

I guess I don't get the need to secure the thread on the bobbin - I store 'not-being-used' bobbins in a little box (a box that came with Christmas cards I purchased at Barnes and Noble that has an attached lid - like an old cigar box). I keep it next to my machine. Grab a bobbin when I need it. I store empty are partially full ones in this box. I suppose if I were taking multiple bobbins out of the house I might consider the tube...but that has yet to happen.

Spools of thread I do secure the ends: I purchased some Hugo 'Amazing' Reusable Tape and wrap open spools. I put all the spools in boxes I purchased at Michael's - the photograph boxes. (Lots of decorative ones available - and they go on sale often.) They have a little holder on the front of the box where you can put a label if you want. When looking for thread - I open the lid and they are all standing there saying 'pick me'!

You can also use the Hugo tape to 'wrap' a bobbin to a spool. Very cool stuff.

Great idea Tartan thanks for sharing . You might find tubing in a tropical fish department of any pet shop.

luvstoquilt 03-05-2016 05:42 AM

Thanks Tartan! Great idea.

jmoore 03-06-2016 03:21 AM

great tip, thanks for sharing... my DH bought be a couple of bobbin rings for my Christmas stocking.

Golfergal 03-06-2016 05:04 AM

Like those little boxes! Where do you buy the chocolates at to get the boxes? I have never heard of them! Really like your idea for bobbins but also pins and etc too.

Tartan 03-06-2016 05:10 AM

The chocolates that are round with gold wrappers and come out at Christmas at Walmart. The right company name is Ferrero Rocher.

Edie 03-06-2016 05:36 AM

I use the narrow green painters tape to hold my thread in place on the bobbin and I use a Truvia plastic container to put the bobbins in.. I have three (and they are stackable and see-throughable) Truvia containers now holding empty bobbins; bobbins that I have threaded with my neutral thread and bobbins that have different colored thread so when I need a little thread, there I am! I love Truvia (tastes better than sugar) but I love the containers even better. Oh yah, I do label the containers of everything I have - helps me not to remember what I have, but what I DON'T have! Enjoy the day. St. Paul, Mn is going to have a 50+ degree day, snow is almost gone. But knowing good old Minnesota, we will have a couple more good storms. Why? It is high school tournament time.....wrestling, basketball and hockey. Google St. Peter's #3 Miracle. Edie

I use clear compartmented fishing tackle boxes and have done so for 30 years. I have one box for each of my 3 machines (FW, 401A, and my computerized machine. No problem keeping up with the bobbins.

grammasharon 03-06-2016 05:41 AM

What a great idea! I am always fussing over the threads unwinding in my rubber bobbin holder. When I purchased it I thought it would be the perfect holder, not so. Still have threads coming out unless I happen to get the ends tucked in just right. Such a pain. Hubby will be happy to cut mine. Yea!

Great idea Tartan...........like grammasharon, mine are continually shedding, even in the bobbin holder. DH is going for plastic tubing for another project today. Maybe I can talk him into getting the size required. Thanks for the great idea.

rjwilder 03-06-2016 07:52 AM

I have used the tubing but found it's hard to cut even with the PVC cutting tool. SO I just go to the dollar store and buy a package of the little tiny baby hair scrunchies and use them. I store them in a clear plastic box that was made for beading I think, it has lots of dividers so I kind of store them by color and try to match the scrunchie to the thread as close as possible.

Onebyone 03-06-2016 08:34 AM

The Truvia plastic containers are great. The lid is what makes the difference.

I use Tartan's idea and I keep my bobbins with the spools they match using nuts and bolts.

citruscountyquilter 03-06-2016 09:21 AM

I tried doing this but couldn't get the hose to cut straight. It was very hard to cut. I tried an exacto knife, scissors and probably something else I can't remember but finally gave up as the hose wouldn't cut. I got it at Lowe's. I too am interested in how you get it to cut straight.

Clmay 03-06-2016 09:35 AM

I use the bobbin keepers. They keep my thread and bobbin together without any hassle.

Tartan 03-06-2016 11:16 AM

I guess I am not too fussy because I just hold it down with my left hand and cut through almost to the bottom with a serrated knife. I finish the last bottom cut and the slit with a pair of old scissors. Maybe it depends on how thick your plastic hose is?

MargeD 03-06-2016 12:16 PM

Great idea. I think I saw this on a quilting show a while back, but I can't remember the name of the quilt teacher who gave that tip. That's a great idea though because the thread on those little devils keep trying to run away from me.

Same here. That is where I get mine. It comes in all sizes.

yel 03-06-2016 01:01 PM

i found some of those things you put around your toe when putting polish on them..at the family dollar ....they are INDIVIDUAL TOE SEPARATORS 12 IN A PACK ...work great as well ..then i put them on each spool of thread with a golf tee it keeps all the bobbins neat and with their spool of thread

Karen Mc 03-06-2016 01:27 PM

Thank you for sharing! This is a great idea!

maryellen2u 03-06-2016 04:20 PM

Oh boy! Now I must go buy that Roche Chocolate! I love these excuses to buy fabric, chocolate, thread...
