Bobbin thread
 

Has anyone here ever used a different color bobbin thread to quilt?

Almost always I use a different color of thread in the bobbin. Most always I use a 50 or 60 weight thread in the bobbin and a larger thread, frequently 30 or 40 on the surface. I do this so that the quilting will show up and be a part of the total project. I like quilting that contrasts with the pieced pattern. Being willing to use a different color thread in the bobbin opens up so many options.

All the time. Very seldom does my backing get the same. When choosing backing I do tend to try to choose one that will need a light/ medium color thread If I will be using light/ medium on top, or dark if top is dark. Right now I'm quilting with a cream Glide thread on top and a brown variegated Gutermann thread in the bottom.

I use different color bobbin thread when I piece too. If I can see the different color on top or bottom then I know my stitch is not balanced.

When piecing, bobbin and top thread rarely match, but when quilting on my frame, top and bobbin thread the same.

It all depends on how good the tension is on your machine. Do a sample and if the bobbin thread doesn't show on the front, or the top thread doesn't show on the back, or you kind of like the polka dot look, go for it. The other thing is if you do get the opposite side thread showing a tiny bit, this is really diminished when you wash the quilt. The stitching does sink in a bit.

When I piece, anything goes! I often use serger thread to piece in fact, since someone gave me a lifetime supply and I don't own a serger. I don't care at all if the top and bottom match.

When I FMQ, I almost always match the bobbin to the top thread. It really hides the little mistakes I always make (usually moving the fabric too fast....). Even Leah Day suggests using matching threads when FMQ.

Serger thread is weak thread. It's meant to be used with other cones of thread on the serger to make it a sturdy stitch.

But it's ok to piece with right? Because in the end the whole item will be stabilized with the quilting which is done with real, honest to goodness thread.

I DON'T if I am going to do FMQ. You will have a bit of the bobbin pop up on the front of your quilt.
