Bobbin Work
 

I have read two different threads and both talked about bobbin work. Can someone tell me what it is? I have been sewing for nearly 60 years and have never heard of it.

Bobbin work is when you use decorative threads or yarns( any thing too large to thread through the needle) in the bobbin and work from the wrong side of the quilt or fabric to embelish . Often very narrow ribbons are used , but almost all of the heavier or thicker fibers are hand wound on to the bobbin. Some bypass the bobbin tension or adjust the tension crew on the bobbin case to get the proper balance. I have a seperate bobbin case just for bobbin work , as too many adjustments in the bobbin case can get tricky whe going back to regular thread.

Bobbin work is a decorative technique that uses thicker or specialty threads. Often you have to wind the bobbin by hand. You often need to loosen the tension on your bobbin case, which is very scary for most people, so the alternative is to get a separate bobbin case for this type of work. Since the specialty thread is in the bobbin, you work from the reverse side of the fabric, with right side down. You can free motion, or use specialty stitches.

Before you do bobbin work - BUY A SECOND BOBBIN - because you will have to loosen the tension and it is nearly impossible to get it back to the exact tension it was before.
