BOM without kits?

Hi All,

Other than the BOM with Eleanor Burns Down on the Farm, are there any BOM's that don't have the kits included?

I like the idea of using my stash, but find it helpful to stay on track when working things as a BOM (at least that is my hopes!). But all the BOM's I'm finding are the full kit.

Anyone know of a neat site to try?
Thanks!

Pick the size block you want and do one a month from Quilt Blocks Galore? Just a thought. My sister and I are doing a block a month from the patterns from the 2014 Row by Row that we collected but never made.

GingerK 08-20-2018 05:26 AM

https://www.fatcatpatterns.com/bom.html has two running right now. Both patterns are free for the month of issue and then a small charge. There are several others from various blogspots. I think it is a matter of bookmarking the sites or signing up for the newsleters so that you know when the various ones start.

This is not a BOM, but I treated it like one so I wouldn’t be so overwhelmed. I have a quilt pattern and each block is needle turn appliqué, 16 blocks in all. I treated it as a BOM, and I am now working on my last block.

I’ve done 3 just looking thru quilt blocks galore and books I have that have blocks in them. I keep them in a 12” project box that I got at Hobby Lobby. When I’m between projects I’ll look for something I want to try and make a block and put it in the box with the others. The only thing I have in there that’s not a finished block is the background color fabric. I think I have 32 blocks in there right now. I’ll have to make the quilt pretty soon and start a new box as I’m running out of the background fabric (0:

Hi Red,

If you like civil war style, Piecing the Past usually has a free BOW running. The current week's block is offered free, and after that she sells it for $.99. When the BOW is over, the completed patterns sell for about $15.

You could sign up for her newsletters and then you will be able to get in on the start of the next one. I did one of her BOWs, "Rest and Refreshing", and was very pleased. And of course you don't have to use civil war fabrics.

Pat Sloan does a lot of these, too.

I'm doing the Moda Blockheads #2 now. A free block pattern is posted on line every week. There a quite a few others like this.

sewingitalltogether 08-20-2018 08:24 AM

There is a 365 block challenge with one block a day all year. And a 180 block challenge with blocks 180 days. Check both of them out. Don't have the websites. Google them, they will come right up.

I like the Freshly Pieced Summer Sampler. https://freshly-pieced-quilt-pattern...eries-patterns

I made a quilt for one of my young nieces using one of the blocks from this summers BOM.

Doggramma 08-20-2018 11:26 AM

Zen Chic is starting a BOM in October. It's sort of a modern sampler look. She'll have kits available, but I'm planning on using my stash.

There are lots and lots of free block of the months online. I have been saving several to do "some day":
http://www.jeanneraecrafts.com/spark...le.html#blocks
Jinny Beyer still has all her clues available for her Kyoto Mystery BOM: https://jinnybeyer.com/promos/kyoto-...m_medium=email
From Quilting Confections: http://www.quiltingconfections.com/free/
I'm saving many of these:
https://www.google.com/search?q=free...CAQQCA#imgrc=_
Pat Sloan always has lots of free things going on. check out the list on the right side bar. http://blog.patsloan.com/2017-myster...drens-library/
This link has lots more that are still available to start/catch up on:
https://www.google.com/search?q=free...nt=firefox-b-1
Many on this list are also still available (some repeats too): https://blog.ajpadilla.com/2018-free-boms/

I have more....I think it's an illness...

QuiltE 08-20-2018 01:18 PM

Here's one currently being done here on the QB as a QAL BOM ....

There are so many free BOMs online.
Let Google be your friend!

I love Sue Pelland's "My Magical Garden" which is being offered as both a pattern-only BOM and a pattern-and-fabric BOM.

https://suepellanddesigns.com/2018-bom

If you scroll down and look under the Instagram and Facebook logos, there's another link that shows pictures of the blocks. The link says "My Magical Garden" Quilt-Along Patterns and Videos.

Teen 08-20-2018 05:07 PM

American Quilter's Society typically has free block challenges. They are currently working on Road to Paducah. I think it's cool looking. I'm not participating but I'm downloading the daily blocks...

Jinny Beyer’s Moonglow was originally a BOM, and the pattern is still available. Free except it is 75 pp long.

Yes, I am doing one of them right now, the gnome one.

Battle Axe 08-21-2018 02:20 AM

I second sewbizgirl's suggestion of piecing the past. The designer's name is Debbie McInnis and she is most helpful when it come to problems. You can buy a kit if you want. I've done about 3 with her and have always been pleased with the end result Her approach is good for me since I am a messy quilter. You cut the pieces a llittle bigger and then trim them down. There are some real stunning interpretations if you Google or look in Pinterest. Let us see what you do.... Marcia

redstilettos 08-21-2018 03:16 AM

Oh some of these are absolutely perfect! Whoot! Whoot! Excited girl here!!

pocoellie 08-21-2018 04:07 AM

There's a number of free BOMs on the web, which I save on my computer, and use the fabrics I want to use. I don't buy kits, or pre-cuts.

Dolphyngyrl 08-21-2018 08:04 AM

Imost bom i have seen are actual patterns you can buy i would just buy the pattern, cut it out and separate it into months

sJens 08-21-2018 10:10 AM

I am doing the National Quilt Museum Challenge BOM Club---no kit to buy. Also the Featherweight Shop.Com is doing the Farm Girl Vintage BOM --- no kit but need the book "Farm Girl Vintage". And others have mentioned Eleanor Burns' Quilt in a Day Fun on the Farm BOM ---no kit or pattern to buy.

madamekelly 08-21-2018 11:25 AM

I am currently collecting the patterns for a nice quilt done by “Morning Glory Designs” that will be beautiful whether I use her colors or mine. No kit involved, but I believe she has several patterns ongoing. After she offers them free she then sells them for not much.

KwiltyKahy 08-21-2018 02:38 PM

I am amazed at how many BOM there are out there. I am currently collecting patterns from the National Quit Museum BOM Challenge and Quilters for Comfort (Block every 2 weeks). Both free and challenging.

mjpEncinitas 08-22-2018 05:36 AM

The Craftsy 2012 block of the month is one of the best. I use it to teach people different quilting methods. It’s free.

linmid 08-22-2018 06:58 AM

Teen,
Thanks for the site I am downloading the blocks.

sewnclog 08-22-2018 08:59 AM

Pat Sloan has had several; she offers kits if you want them but shows colors so you can choose your own and most I've seen are free - but one and they are using a specific book for it.

redstilettos 08-22-2018 09:05 AM

linmid: I just downloaded all those blocks, too! Hoping they are within my skillset

mjp: this looks cool!

I have so many options now, I am giddy!!

I'm with SewBizgirl, I really like the BOW offerings from Piecing the Past. Her instructions are really good and her patterns are challenging but doable. I joined the FB group and it's like we all work on the BOW together. We are getting near the end of her Summer at the Cabin pattern. If you like her designs, you can sign up and be ready for whatever she does next.

There are so many out there. We could keep this thread going for a long time.

RuthiesRetreat3 08-22-2018 11:01 AM

Pat Sloan has a site with frequent BOMs or BOWs, patterns only or with kits.
Also, Piecing the Past site has the same offers, with different quilts. So far, all the patterns I have gotten from these two sites were free.

mindless 08-22-2018 11:53 AM

All these links are sew much fun! thank you all.
If you like applique, you can join Esther Aliu FB group and create The Queen's Garden for free. She has other projects as well. LOTS of applique.
This is her blog (scroll down for more free and not free patterns): http://estheraliu.blogspot.com/

edit: removed the FB link because it went to my FB page with a link to her group. You can just go to FB and do a search of her name to find her group.
