You could also try a craftsy class for beginners. Once I understood the basics, I bought books that focus on a particular type of pattern or technique.

I'm with Paper Princess - the Harriet Hargrave series Quilter's Academy are the absolute best! The books take you from the basics - how to cut - and how to sew an accurate seam - how to get the size block you need, etc. The book then gives you projects to work on with each lesson you learn. This is a series of 6 books (book number 4 should come out in a year) that takes you all the way to designing your own quilts.

My favorite is "Your First Quilt Book....or it should be". I still refer to it all the time.

I am another fan of the Quilter's Academy series. What I like about this series over some of the other books mentioned is that Harriet and Carrie really explain the reasoning behind tips and instructions.

I took a day long class from Harriet in May. It was a fabulous experience.
