Book to put on my wishlist?

My birthday is coming up and my husband wants to know if there are any quilting books I'd like. I bet there is, but there are just so many to chose from. I'd like a book wich I can use as a reference. Id like it to contain the different speed piecing methods of the basic blocks and the equations for them. Anyone know of a book like this?
I'd also appreciate any other recommendation on a good quilting book for an intermediate piecer and quilter.
Thanks!

Watching this as I would love to have a book showing this all in one place.

Billie Lauder has great speed piecing books with tips and tricks. Not many new quilters know about her.

The best series I have found are Harriet Hargraves Quilter's Academy. It will be a series of 6 books, 4 are already out with #5 due out next year. They take you from the basics to designing your own quilts.

Quilts!, Quilts!!, Quilts!!! and Encyclopedia of Classic Quilt patterns are both great references.

In addition to your request for a basic reference, I'd also add Pam & Nicky Lintott's "Jelly Roll Quilts" published in 2008. I got it at my local Half Price Books and it's also available on Half Dot Com as well as Amazon. I've made 4 quilts from the book so far - all use 2.5" strips (jelly roll or cut your own) and the patterns range from a basic braid to a flower to an easy Lone Star.

I used to watch Billie Lauder on Simply Quilts. She was one of my favorite teachers. She had so many good short cut ideas

I recommend The Art of Classic Quiltmaking by Sharyn Craig and Harriet Hargrave. It's no longer in print, but worth it if you can find a copy. My opinion about the Quilter's Academy series is that it is okay, but poorly edited, compared to Harriet's first book.

Not sure if this fits, but I could not do without my Bonnie Hunter Books - all of them. There are patterns of course, but she teaches several ways to do certain blocks and here string block quilts are not to be missed.

I agree but didn't know about this series, I have her books about machine quilting and appliqueing and they have been the most important books in my library.

Ditto! I remember the shaded nine patch (don't remember if that was the name, but it had a lighter side and a darker side diagonally).

A friend recommended A Quilter's Catalog to me. It's an odd name, as it makes me think of catalog as in magazine to circle things I want. It's really more like catalog of information... http://www.amazon.com/The-Quilters-C...ter%27s+catalg

The Quilter ' Complete Guide is the book that I always go back to as a reference. I don't know how many quick techniques it has but it is the best reference book in quilting imho.

[h=1]The Quilters Ultimate Visual Guide: From A to Z - Hundreds of Tips and Techniques for Successful Quiltmaking edited by Ellen Phal. I can't tell you how often I refer to this book. The pictures really explain things well. It's just a gem.[/h]

I'd recommend the Art of Machine Piecing, by Sally Collins. She teaches how to piece precisely. I've only adopted a couple of her techniques, and my piecing life runs so much smoother! Pieces fit together easily, with less ripping and re-doing. I recommend this book and buy it for friends all the time. I took an all day workshop with her, on precision piecing, and it is hands-down the best class I ever took.

Everyone's suggestions are great. Might I add Eleanor Burns is known for her quick techniques. Super simple instructions. I just added to my collection "both book and DVD" Sally Collins Mastering Precision Piecing.

And it is not even available in Sweden... oh well. I'll keep an eye out for it though.

I've seen these. How are they? Are the first ones really basic?

mariatherese 09-04-2014 07:43 AM

I just need to say thanks to everyone who has contributed! If I look at the rating at Amazon almost all books have at least a 4.5 out of 5. Nothing beats more personalized advice.
