I know this is a long shot but my DH wants to make me a large bookshelf to store both my material and books. He's looking for one with a top shelf that will hold bolts of material and then the shelves on the lower level. He's looked online but can't find what he wants. Anyone know of a source?

I just buy my bookcases at walmart.

I would think you could find large entertainment centers on freecycle or craigslist. I have seen some very large ones and the prices are soooo cheap, thanks to mounting tv's on the walls.

If he wants to make it, couldn't he just draw it out on paper and design it himself ? Just make sure that it is not top heavy

I saw bookcase instructions online once at the DIY network site.

hgtv, pbs, diy, the yankee workshop, and 2x4 furnature are all sites that offer plans for do it yourself wood work projects...also, sometimes stores like home depot and lowes offer free plans and workshops.

Take him to a quilt shop and look at theirs! I bought some from a so-fro fabric shop and they hold everything I put on them which is not as much as the bolts they held in the store! Plus these are adjustable!

Fancy! I love to see bookcases that go around doorways. I don't think there is a doorway with space on both sides in my house.

Thank all of you for your great ideas. I want him to just buy the bookcase but for some reason DH is insisting he make it. His projects, how can I put this gently, don't always turn out according to plans of paper but the fabric and books will hide mistakes and he'll be happy :-D

Boy, I know what you mean about them not turning out as planned. Good luck to both of you.

You might want to try IKEA. I have one about 90miles away and just came back with a load of shelving and a work desk. Great prices and you can design own style. They have a much larger selection that what is shown online.
