Border debating
2 Attachment(s)
This is a 60x60 inch rag quilt pre- washing. One layer of flannel used as the middle layer. I don’t know what to expect for shrinkage after it’s washed so debating about adding black borders to increase size.
What would you do? Thanks |
Ooooh, this is gorgeous! I can see adding a nice solid black border, just to 'finalize' the edge...
|
I think a black border would look great---it would pick up on the black sashings you have scattered in there.
|
Beautiful and fun colors! I like the idea of a black border too. Is the rag fabric going to leave lint on it though?
|
black binding would do the trick! lovely quilt!!
|
If you prewashed the flannel, I wouldn't expect there to be much more shrinkage. I sew an x through each block to help stabilize a rag quilt. If you want to add a black border, it would be pretty with your blocks. To me, part of the fun of a rag quilt is to not have to use borders and bindings. A more casual look.

I don't think it needs a border. Black binding would look really nice.

My husband is gripe-ing right now about the little rag quilt I made for the “grands” to play on....he’s vacuuming..... :-)
He also made a rag quilt for the bed (Q) and I had to add two rows to make it wider. Just a thought when using flannel. Also, what about a grey border or one of the darker colored fabrics....black will be very stark. |
Question: are you going to clip those seams before washing? I think I would like the rag look more on the pieced side rather than the backside, but that's just my personal like........
|
I love the teals and black. I'd just stitch around the outside edges, clip and wash. It's beautiful.
|
I increased the size of a rag quilt by making 6x18 inch rag rectangles and sewed them around the edges....made a really nice framing effect.
|
Gorgeous quilt!

Nice quilt. If you use a border stitched to the back side, you can clip it to increase the size of the ragged area. Or, if you like the size, you could just use a wider than usual binding. Fun project.
|
No advice but that's one of the prettiest rag quilts I've ever seen!!
|
I am partial to black but grey would be fine too!!

Very pretty.

Very Pretty!! & it looks like a very cozy quilt to cuddle with!!
I would add a black edging whether it be a border and binding (depending if you want it larger) or just binding. Great job!! |
