Border help

3 Attachment(s)
Ladies please help- I am working on a feather star quilt and need help deciding which border. I have already attached the 1st border and now not sure if I like it. Pic 2 is another boder that I may like better. What do you tbink? I will need to rip off border 1 and then take the HST apart - UGH! Opinions?????

nativetexan 11-06-2014 07:56 AM

is the pieced border going to be on all sides? It's not bad but needs to be all around. Not sure you need more after that. especially of the print (pretty as it is).

I would take off all the borders, then add the light burgundy, pieced border then the green & bind it with the black flowers. I prefer the first pieced border you have.

PaperPrincess 11-06-2014 08:04 AM

I'm really sorry, but I think the sawtooth pieced border goes much better with the feathered star. You can take the original border apart watching TV!

Tartan 11-06-2014 08:37 AM

Think the pieced border draws my eye away from the center star. If it was my quilt I would want the star to be the focal point.

I also feel as though the black flowers should come after the other borders. I think I would try a smaller sawtooth, the size of the smaller ones in the quilt, between the red and green strips, then the black flowers. It's lovely!

I really don't like to say this, but I don't care for the pieced border at all. You want your feather star to be the center of attention which you made so beautifully and a busy border distracts from your piecing that you did such a great job.

katier825 11-06-2014 03:56 PM

I think I'd pass on the pieced border. It takes your eye away from the center, which is beautiful. :)

margied 11-06-2014 03:58 PM

I like the black, red and green and just stop there. I agree - the pieced border takes away from the beautiful star.

mmac71 11-06-2014 04:19 PM

I agree...The sawtooth border is what caught my eye...It takes away from the main star. Beautiful quilt...

Remove the last border and it will again be perfect!

Your feathered star is really beautiful! Hi BigSis63!!!!

paoberle 11-07-2014 05:51 AM

Leave the pieced border off. I would make it part of the backing for some interesting detail.

GailG 11-07-2014 05:58 AM

Your border example in the last picture (set aside from the pieced border) is the order that I think is best -- green, burgandy, the print. I would use the border strips in that order and eliminate the pieced border completely. Beautiful star!

nabobw 11-07-2014 06:04 AM

I agree with this. The pieced border takes away from the star.

Thanks for all the advice! The problem is that I want to make this quilt much bigger than the original pattern. The quilt is broken down like this- the finished center is 18" putting it together with the feather star border makes that section 33" after adding 3 border the finished size of the quilt is 55". I want to make it 90". So
I added a 4" border to the feathered star section, 2- 1" borders, 2" sawtooth border, 2- 1" border, final border in black floral print with be ? (probably 12-15" border).

below is the link to this book "Scalling Down" The pic on the cover is the center that I made but I changed the pieced border. This is a good book because it gives you 12 different centers and 12 different borders.

I like pic 2 best. They're both really pretty though.

sewnsewsue 11-08-2014 05:14 AM

Beautiful star! IMHO the pieced border distracts the eye. Sometimes, less is more. The simple borders without piecing frames your star perfectly.

msrosecooks 11-08-2014 05:35 AM

I like it without the pieced border.

Basketman 11-08-2014 06:24 AM

Count me in on the suggestion to remove the pieced border but I think a strip of white or a solid dark to replace it might make the star really stand out...then something a bit bold for the binding that pulls all the colors together?

salederer 11-08-2014 07:37 AM

I agree with maniacquilter. The sawtooth distracts from your beautiful center.

Friday1961 11-08-2014 07:56 AM

Forgive me for saying I don't think the sawtooth or pieced border does your beautiful quilt justice. Personally, I would remove it, keep the black print border and the narrow burgundy one, and replace the narrow green border with a wider green one, say 4 or 5 inches. And then bind, perhaps, with the black rose print. The center of your quilt is so striking, that the borders should complete and complement it, not distract from it. Just my opinion, of course.

wildyard 11-08-2014 08:11 AM

Your quilt is wonderful, what a great job you did on the star!! I am afraid I have to agree with some of the others in saying I do not care for the first pieced border as I think it detracts from the quilt. If you really want to use the pieced border, I, too, would go with the sawtooth type that matches your star.
If you are adding the borders to add length, only to the top and bottom, then I would use the ones you have, just changing out the pieced sections to the sawtooth HSTs.
If you are only adding borders because you want the finished look, I think I might prefer to have the green, then the burgandy and finish with the wider black print.
No matter what you do, it's going to be a wonderful quilt!!!

Suz 11-08-2014 08:37 AM

I agree, the pieced border must go. Too distracting from the beautiful center. I would take off all borders, reduce the width of the green (as the green and rose are the same) and have the beautiful black fabric as the o/s border. Binding could then be green, rose or black. The center star is wonderfully executed.

dcamarote 11-08-2014 08:41 AM

First of all, the quilt top is beautiful. I like all the borders, except, the saw tooth. I think it is distracting while the other borders compliment the rest of the quilt. I would just remove the saw tooth and leave the rest as is. It really is pretty.

MargeD 11-08-2014 01:02 PM

Since you asked for opinions, I might remove the pieced border, as it is almost too light, I would just add the black print border after the green and red borders. Your quilt is absolutely gorgeous. This is on my Roundtoit List, just not sure when I'm going to get around to it.

debbiemarie 11-08-2014 01:42 PM

I like the pieced border, it makes it original, if you like it keep it.

suzanprincess 11-08-2014 09:29 PM

I, too, don't care for the pieced border competing for attention with the lovely star, but if this will be on a bed, the portion that hangs over the edge of the mattress will look entirely different than when laid out flat with the top portion. On a bed the pieced border running along the lower section will be a design on its own. I do like the floral, red and green borders as shown for the top portion.

Several have mentioned this and i agree. the saw tooth border is distracting and your quilt is simply beautiful. I think you'll be happier to have the print and the two solids and let the saw tooth go.

giquilt 11-08-2014 09:48 PM

I like the black flower border, it really frames the quilt. Is it the same flowers in the star or is the fabric in the last pic the black star fabric? Either way it looks good. The sawtooth border goes better with the quilt style. It does not matter the color for the binding as long as it is darker than the pink in the sawtooth. Really adding all the borders would look great. You did put a lot of work in the star.

Here is wat I decided to do with the borders. I did listen to you all but i really like this top with the saw tooth border since I think it breaks up the black border. Not quilted yet but here are pics with the top done and it on the bed! quilt measures 92x92.

wildyard 11-14-2014 06:50 AM

I'm glad you went with the HSTs! It's a beautiful quilt!!! I love your black floral fabric!!

suzanprincess 11-15-2014 12:23 AM

Seeing the completed top I've changed my earlier opinion, and think you made the very best choice, not only because you like the sawtooth border so much but because it just fits in so well in the finished top! With all the black floral around it, the sawtooth adds just the right finishing touch to the star.
