Border math help
 

It’s one of “those mornings” where my brain refuses to cooperate! I would like my border to finish at 6 inches, I will be sewing the small inner border to the larger outer border before mitering the corners and sewing them to the quilt. My mind says this:

4.5 + 2.5 = 7. This is the unfinished before sewing small border to larger border.
7 - .5 = 6.5 after bother borders are sewn together
6.5 - .5 = 6 after borders are sewn onto quilt

Remember to allow enough length to "make the corners"

I'm in the place you're at with mitered corners. I'm using a stripe for the sashing so trying to get both sides to match up is my problem. So decided to sew just the corners up to the 1/4" seam and about 10 inches the other direction, then I'll measure and seam the 2 ends together in the middle making sure there's no fullness. Luckily I have a border to add to it afterwards so that will take out any fullness I might have made on the sashing. The border will also be mitered only because the sashing is mitered. Think it looks better when you make both the sashing and border mitered instead of only one or the other..............just my opinion though.

It may sound easier to sew inner border to outer border and then sew the piece to the quilt, but then you have to miter the corners! I hate mitering corners so I do the "extra work " of sewing each border seperately on to the top. Really is not that much work since you are still sewing 2 seams. No need to miter corners then unless you are a "glutton for punishment" Actually I just sew each border like I would any border. If you fabric "demands" to be matched, then make a "HST cornerstone" of the outside fabric and insert it using the usual method of adding cornerstones to borders! After quilting you really cannot see the extra seams!
