border question

Is it possible to add a strip of fabric around a block without having to rip all the other fabric that has already been sewn on around it? I have a center panel I made and have sewn 2 other strips around it already but now think a thin black border around the Center one would look best but am wondering if I need to rip off the other fabric in order to add it.

I hope that makes sense....lol

I think removing the other strips is your best approach. The only other option I can think of is cutting on the seamline of the strips you want to remove but this will cut off the seam allowance of your main panel and will reduce its overall size when you sew the new black border on--but if the new black border adds the same width and length back, it might just work for you.

Yeah I figured I'd have to take the complete outer strips off but was hoping
there may be a way I didn't know of. Arg! I was almost done, just needed to add the last 4 strips to all sides and I'd be done. Off to remove these 8 strips and tear it back to the beginning block

I think you are making the right decision. The black really makes it pop!

QuiltnNan 06-26-2014 06:00 PM

the black border sure would enhance the center

quiltingbuddy 06-26-2014 06:04 PM

Yes, I agree, the black really enhances the center and makes it pop! Is that appliqued or printed? It looks great!

Have you thought about making the black strip as an applique? You would have to iron under the edges or sew it and turn it inside out. Ironed down edge applique would be simpler. Then either hand stitch it on or topstitch the strip to the original top. Accuracy would be the key. You would not have to rip anything out if you did it this way. Or, you could use steam-a-seam lite and make it a raw edge applique and satin or blanket stitch around the black strip.

As with anything, there isn't just one way to solve a problem. It's whatever works best for you.

Happy quilting,
Barb

Definitely black border. Love the idea of applique!

ManiacQuilter2 06-27-2014 04:38 AM

The black border does really make the quilt POP.

Quiltngolfer 06-27-2014 05:28 AM

I think Barb is on to something. I would appliqué the black border too.

Looks way better now. Now I have another question. For the next border would you put a thicker black border and then the teal again? Or a white border and then black?

sherrilynn13 06-27-2014 12:12 PM

The Center wolf is applique

PenniF 06-27-2014 01:31 PM

I'd chose black if it were mine.....let the white around the wolf stand on its own.

Kitsie 06-28-2014 08:53 AM

If you took off the other borders to add the black one, the other borders would not be long enough when you sew them back on. Yes, applique it on.
