Border for small quilt - crosswise or lengthwise

Crosswise or lengthwise. Can you help? Doing small 40" x 50" lap quilt - can i get away with border on that cut on crosswise as my matching fabric is only "20" long by wof. Will do corner blocks too.... Any advice appreciated! It's a very fine lightweight cotton. Thx.

I just did a quilt using both cuts on the border...it was a directional print so I needed it to flow the same way...came out fine...is that what you meant?

Yes, i read that one should cut for border on lengthwise or causes uneven edge etc but wondered if less concern on smaller items..was your quilt a fairly small one Treasureit ?

I cut my borders either way. Most often WOF. I don't see a difference.

many people always cut their borders *width*of fabric and piece them- not wanting to deal with cutting long lengths- or wanting to 'narrow' their fabric. cut them any way they work for you.

Oh that's great, I was worried! Back to doing the border then. I need a distraction from the fact our "well" stopped 6 days ago and still no water to the house. Quilting is a great distraction and sorting my small stash for my next project will cheer me. The little frustrations of life ...

I almost always cut mine WOF. Once in a while, because of the pattern, I'll cut them lengthwise. And every once in a while I'll cut them both directions because the pattern is directional.

Sewing the borders on with the border fabric next to the feed dogs is more likely the cause of wavy borders than cutting them WOF.
