Me too. I often use a narrow, usually 1in, inner border inside the main border. . I've done that on the top that started this discussion: a 1in border of a bright, contrasting colour, that really makes the quilt pop.

I use the Fibonacci "rule" as a guideline but my final decision rests on auditioning it to see how it looks and also how much fabric I have. Sometimes for me 1/2" makes a difference if I have enough fabric.

One of the quilt books I used to read had about 4-5 borders on each quilt. So now I audition many fabrics in various widths and they are lovely. There is no set rule about width of borders or how many to put on.

Absolutely audition it. Open it wide and put the 4" on one side and the 4 1/2" on the other side. Leave it for awhile. Notice that every time you walk into the room, which side looks better to you. One will make itself known to you. As 'zen' or 'hippie-like' as that sounds, it is so true with quilts, they will tell you what works.

We had a Fibonacci quilt at our show this spring. It was very well done, but I wonder how many people understood what it was all about.
