borders on purple/red/white Log Cabin
1 Attachment(s)
I finished the center of a Log Cabin (purple, red, white) and I think I have decided on my borders. My question is....how wide would you make the outer border? At the moment, it is 4 inches on my design wall (as I have several extra 2 1/2 strips and have sort of stuck them together to look at), but I am thinking that 6 inches would look better.
This is not the design I started off to make, but when I got my 16 blocks done, they just didn't look like I thought they would, so I kept rearranging until I got this one that I like. It is called Barn Raising. In hindsight, I think there is too much white in this, but I still like it. So, how wide would you make the outer border, if this was your quilt? The red will finish at 2 inches. Thanks for any opinions, and thanks also for those who helped me decide what color to make the center of each block. :) Dina |
Hope this link about using the Golden Ratio to determine border widths will help you, it has helped me.

Love it as is...........red = 2 inch and blue=4 inch.

I love it and I don't think there's too much white. It makes it so clean and crisp. I like the borders as is.

Very pretty! I like the borders as you have them pictured.
|
Very pretty quilt.
|
I like what you have The red same as your center squares and purple same as two purple sides together in your layout
|
A fabulous quilt and I really like your choice for the borders.

The narrow 2" and wider purple 4" look fine.

Sorry...double post.

I like the red probably at a width of 1.5" but the purple probably should be a little wider. Usually my borders for that size is about 3.5" to 4" finished. I would do the binding in the same purple fabric. Looks great! :)

I think this block arrangement is great. I would try the purple border at 1-2 in. wider.
|
I like the red and blue...keep going!
|
Pretty quilt, I like the borders you have as they are.

The red probably at a width of 1.5" but the purple probably should be a little wider. Love the looks and there isn't too much white in my opinion. Just put the purple border on your design wall a little over the red and see if you like the skinnier look. Show us your final quilt.

What you have will surely look nice. I would try the red, a very small line of he very dark, then a very wide purple. Audition that and see how you like it.
|
I'd go with 3" and 5". Those seem to always work for me.
|
For another suggestion and if you have more purple fabric, might you think on the lines of using a smaller red strip with purple on both sides similar to a pinstripe? For myself I like wide outer borders so I can play with quilting patterns but that's just me. You did a great job of the quilt.

Very pretty quilt. I love purple and red together.
|
I like your quilt the way it is, it's beautiful.

Thanks for the kind words and the suggestions. I have both borders cut, and I am still deciding on exactly which sizes to use. I can always cut them down, but they are cut at 2 1/2 inches and 6 inches. I am making myself clean house tomorrow before I do any quilting. That should give me time to think. :)

It's a gorgeous quilt! I love log cabins and how many different ways there are to configure the blocks! I usually don't do borders, but when I need to, I tend to do a narrow inner and the outer about 2.5-3x wider that than. Take pictures with your digital camera and see if that helps you get a better feel for size. If it were my quilt, I'd probably end up doing a 2" finished inner and 5" finished outer border.

I think a dark purple like the third border color I see on the left ( in the picture) would look great. Perhaps wider than is showing. Beautiful top.
